Patrick Dorgu is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury at the Emirates Stadium
Manchester United have been dealt a significant injury setback after Patrick Dorgu was ruled out for more than two months following a hamstring issue sustained during the recent clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
The defender, who played a decisive role in the high-profile fixture in north London, scoring the goal that put United 1-2 ahead, has undergone medical assessments that confirmed he will be sidelined for around 10 weeks.
The timing of the injury comes as a blow for United, who have just picked up form under new interim coach Michael Carrick, defeat the Premier League’s top two – Manchester City at home and Arsenal away – back-to-back.
Dorgu had been enjoying an encouraging run of form prior to the setback, playing higher up the pitch than his customary left-back role. His performance against Arsenal, where he emerged as one of the standout figures on the pitch, further underlined his growing importance within the squad.
The injury occurred during the closing stages of the match, with Dorgu visibly uncomfortable before eventually being withdrawn. Subsequent examinations have now confirmed the extent of the problem, forcing United into an enforced reshuffle.
United forced into rethink
Dorgu’s absence leaves Manchester United short of options in a key area of the pitch. Under Carrick, Dorgu had been deployed more as a wide forward than a full-back. In that position, the likes of Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha, who scored the winner against Arsenal, can fill in for Dorgu.
However, the injury does leave United thin at left-back: Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are the two that can naturally cover the position, while promising full-back Harry Amass is out on loan at Norwich City.

While United are yet to place an exact return date on the 21-year-old, the expectation is that he will miss the majority of the next two months.
Which games will Patrick Dorgu miss for Manchester United?
With an estimated 10-week layoff, Dorgu’s expected return date is around March 7. That means the Dane could miss the following matches:
- Fulham (a) – February 1
- Tottenham (h) – February 7
- West Ham (a) – February 10
- Everton (a) – February 23
- Crystal Palace (h) – March 1
- Newcastle United (a) – March 4
As things stand, Dorgu’s return could come in the home fixture against Aston Villa on March 14.
The setback is especially frustrating given Dorgu’s momentum. He had been building confidence with each appearance and was seen internally as a player capable of pushing for a more regular starting role in the second half of the season.
For now, the focus will be on his rehabilitation, with the club keen to avoid rushing him back before he is fully fit. United’s medical staff will monitor his progress closely, aiming to have him available again as the season enters its decisive phase.
Manchester United will hope that, despite this injury blow, they can maintain stability in defence and continue to build consistency while one of their emerging performers recovers on the sidelines.
