Spanish midfielder set for lengthy absence, forcing Mikel Arteta to reassess midfield options as Arsenal explore late transfer solutions

Arsenal have suffered a serious setback after it was confirmed that Mikel Merino will require surgery on a broken foot, ruling the midfielder out for an extended period and leaving the club short of options at a crucial stage of the season.

With the transfer deadline looming and a demanding fixture list ahead, the injury has triggered urgent discussions inside the club over potential short-term reinforcements.

Merino sustained the injury towards the end of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Manchester United on January 25. Initially, the extent of the problem was unclear, with hopes that the issue might be managed conservatively.

Those doubts deepened when Merino was absent from the squad for the league trip to Leeds at Elland Road on February 1, prompting questions over whether he was being rested amid heavy rotation.

Further assessments quickly clarified the seriousness of the situation. Arsenal’s medical team identified a fracture in Merino’s right foot and, after consultation with specialists, concluded that surgery was unavoidable.

“Mikel will have surgery in the coming days and will then begin his recovery and rehabilitation programme. Mikel is expected to be out of action for an extended period, with the aim of returning to full training before the end of the season,” the club said.

How many matches will Merino miss for Arsenal?

While Arsenal have not placed an exact timetable on Merino’s return, the expectation is that he will miss a significant run of matches across both domestic and European competitions. The focus is on ensuring a full recovery rather than rushing him back, particularly given the nature of foot injuries and the demands of his role.

In the short term, the burden will fall heavily on Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Martin Ødegaard, all of whom have already logged substantial minutes this season.

Squad depth in central midfield is limited. Christian Norgaard is not seen as a direct replacement, while Ethan Nwaneri’s recent loan move to Marseille has removed a potential internal option.

Arsenal looking for replacements: But Tonali bid denied

With internal solutions stretched, Arsenal have begun exploring the market for emergency cover. According to reports, the club are attempting a surprise move for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, although those rumours have quickly been dismissed by the Magpies.

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has suggested Arsenal are pushing despite significant resistance.
