Thomas Frank delivers key squad updates before Spurs host Newcastle, with fresh concerns and selection calls in defence

Tottenham return to home soil on Tuesday night knowing the margin for error is shrinking fast, with pressure mounting as they hover dangerously close to the Premier League relegation places.

Saturday’s defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford was another frustrating afternoon for Spurs, leaving them just six points clear of West Ham in 18th and firmly in need of a response against Newcastle.

Speaking ahead of the midweek fixture, Thomas Frank acknowledged the challenge facing his side, with availability again shaping his thinking as Spurs attempt to stabilise their season.

Amid a torrid injury crisis, with over ten players ruled out, Frank has a new setback to contend with, as Destiny Udogie, who picked up an injury during the loss to Manchester United, will be sidelined for a significant spell.

“Unfortunately Destiny has a hamstring injury, he will be out for 4–5 weeks,” Frank confirmed.

Udogie’s injury opens the door for January signing Souza, who arrived from Santos and replaced him at Old Trafford, to potentially make his first start in a Tottenham shirt. Alternatively, Frank may turn to Djed Spence, who is back in contention.

“Djed Spence is back,” the Spurs head coach said, offering a welcome boost at full-back.

There was less positive news regarding Kevin Danso, who remains unavailable after ongoing medical consultations.

“Kevin [Danso] is with a medical consultant. It is going forward but still weeks before he is available,” Frank explained.

Dejan Kulusevski is also facing an uncertain timeline, with further assessments planned later this week.

“Deki [Dejan Kulusevski] has got another appointment at end of this week where we’ll know more, but of course out of Champions League is a sign it’s not tomorrow,” Frank said.

Asked whether Kulusevski could still feature again this season, Frank added bluntly: “I don’t know.”

Tottenham will also be without Cristian Romero, who is suspended following his red card at Old Trafford. Radu Drăgușin replaced him during the match and is expected to slot into the back line against Newcastle.

With defensive options stretched and little room for manoeuvre in the table, Frank’s team selection on Tuesday night could prove pivotal as Spurs look to halt their slide and restore some momentum at home.
