Kylian Mbappé injury: Return for Manchester City tie unlikely

Real Madrid star Mbappé has been carrying an injury all season and it could eventually prove costly to his Champions League and World Cup hopes

Alarm bells are sounding at Real Madrid with the news that Kylian Mbappé is in very real danger of missing the rest of the season with an injury. To avoid surgery and missing the World Cup, the French star may have to sit out the rest of the club season.

Mbappé has been carrying a sprain in his left knee in recent months and a new diagnosis has revealed that immediate and prolonged rest is the only way to avoid going under the knife.

This has also prompted suggestions that Real Madrid have not properly managed the injury that has already caused the 27-year-old to miss 18 days this season.

Specialist advice in France to save Mbappe’s World Cup

Becoming increasingly frustrated with his condition this season, Mbappé sought a second opinion on his injury in France. The advice from specialist Bertrand Sonnery-Cotte was clear: if he doesn’t rest, he could overexert the knee and cause a more serious problem.

“The posterior ligament of the knee is at the limit of its resistance. The medical statement mentions a sprain, but in reality, the injury is more serious,” journalist Antón Meana told Cadena SER.

“There are 100 days until the World Cup and he doesn’t have a day to spare. Every day of rest is crucial to avoid making things worse.

“Playing a match while the knee is still fragile could lead to serious consequences. It’s better to wait than risk jeopardising the rest of the season.”

Good news for Manchester City as Mbappé likely to miss tie

While Madrid fans will be tormented by this news, Manchester City will receive a boost that they are unlikely to have to worry about dealing with Mbappé in their Champions League last 16 tie.

While Los Blancos are still indicating that they expect Mbappé to be available for those games, Meana has rubbished any suggestion of that and says Mbappé’s camp think the same.

“The dates the club are talking about, that is, the chances of Mbappé being back in time for the return leg against Manchester City, are not shared by his camp,” said Meana.

“The date is completely possible, but taking part in that game would mean a risk he isn’t prepared to take at this time.”

Another injury blow to add to Real Madrid’s list

Aside from navigating the pitfalls of the conflicting standpoints of player and club, for Real Madrid Mbappe’s injury also means another star player on the sidelines.

With Rodrygo out long term and Jude Bellingham out for another month at least, this news is the last thing that Álvaro Arbeloa wanted to hear.
