Sunderland boss spoke about key defensive duo ahead of Brighton clash with the derby against Newcastle around the corner
Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has confirmed that both Robin Roefs and Nordi Mukiele will miss Saturday’s Premier League clash with Brighton, though the pair could return in time for the highly anticipated derby against Newcastle United.
The Black Cats head into the match at the Stadium of Light looking to respond after a disappointing FA Cup exit. Sunderland suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to League One’s bottom side Port Vale, a result that left supporters frustrated, particularly as Le Bris rested players despite Premier League survival almost guaranteed.
Their most recent league outing, however, brought a much-needed boost as Sunderland secured a 1-0 victory away at Leeds United – their first win in five league matches – as they continue their campaign back in the top flight.
Le Bris will once again have to navigate the Brighton fixture without several important players, particularly in defence.
Mukiele has been sidelined since being forced off during Sunderland’s 3-1 home defeat to Fulham on February 21. The French defender, who joined the club from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, quickly became one of Sunderland’s most important signings.
His strength, experience and leadership have made him a central figure in Le Bris’ backline, with many viewing him as one of the bargains of the season.

Goalkeeper Robin Roefs has also been a standout performer since arriving from NEC Nijmegen last summer in a deal worth around €10.5 million. The Dutch shot-stopper has made 28 Premier League appearances so far and recorded eight clean sheets.
Together, Roefs and Mukiele have been key components of a Sunderland defence that currently boasts the joint fourth-best defensive record in the league – an impressive achievement for a side in their first season back in the Premier League.
However, Le Bris confirmed neither player will be ready for the Brighton match.
“This weekend will come too soon for Robin Roefs, Nordi Mukiele and Reinildo. They are in a good place but won’t be available for this fixture,” the Sunderland manager explained.
“Probably they will train next week, Rei 100 per cent, so it’s more about the Newcastle game for them. They are progressing well.”
There was less encouraging news regarding another member of the squad, with Le Bris confirming Bertrand Traoré faces a longer spell on the sidelines.
“After seeking many opinions, we’re expecting Bertrand to be out six to eight weeks minimum… We’ll try conservative [treatment], then depending on the reaction, we’ll see if we need something else.”
