Marcus Rashford needs to seize the moment after Barcelona announced that Raphinha will be ruled out for five weeks due to an injury he sustained while on international duty
The March international break was one to forget for FC Barcelona, who saw one of their most important players return from national team duty with an injury. Raphinha was forced off at half time in Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to France in Boston, with the club announcing that he is going to be sidelined for the next weeks.
Having been ruled out for most of the remainder of the season, Raphinha will miss some crucial games including a league meeting away at Atlético Madrid, as well as both legs of Barcelona’s Champions League quarter-final tie against Los Rojiblancos.
He will also be absent from the Catalan derby against Espanyol and will most likely miss out on the Champions League semi-finals should Barcelona secure qualification, while his participation in May’s potentially title-deciding Clasico against Real Madrid is also doubtful.
Having been dealt with a severe blow as Barcelona chase both of their major objectives heading into the last stretch of the season, Hansi Flick is called to make a decision on how to cover Raphinha’s void.
A shift of formation should not be ruled out, while striker Ferran Torres, as well as midfielders Fermín López and Dani Olmo could also fill in out of position. Yet, the most straightforward solution to Flick’s headache is deploying Marcus Rashford.
The Manchester United loanee hit the ground running at the Blaugrana, recording five goals and four assists in the Champions League group stage.
In 39 appearances across all competitions, Rashford has managed 10 goals and 13 assists mainly featuring off the bench. Yet, his future at Barcelona remains uncertain, as the club are reportedly reluctant to trigger a release clause that would make his move permanent.
Big boots to fill
Should Flick opt for the 28-year-old forward, Rashford is well aware that the task ahead will be particularly challenging. Only Lamine Yamal (21) has registered more goals than Raphinha (19) so far this season, with the Brazil international having managed 27 goal contributions across all competitions despite his fitness struggles.
On top of that, numbers further certify his importance to the team, as Barcelona have lost in just two of his 27 appearances this term and won seven of the 12 matches he has missed out.
Having been a vital cog in Flick’s well-oiled machine over the last two years, Raphinha’s ability to create danger but also provide intensity in pressing the opposition’s defenders allows Barcelona to shape the games on their own terms against almost any opponent.

A golden opportunity for Rashford to revive his career
Hence, the stage is set for Rashford to step up. Barcelona sit four points above second-placed Real Madrid in the LaLiga table while facing a tough tie against an Atlético Madrid, who have eliminated them twice from the Champions League knock-out stages in the recent past.
A first-class opportunity to establish his credentials is up for grabs and Rashford will be called to jump at it, beginning with Saturday’s encounter away at Los Rojiblancos.
“I don’t see anything here as like a pressure. It’s just, I’m here to play football,” Rashford told BBC Sport back in December.
“It’s been amazing. I feel welcome, I feel at home. I’ve just been enjoying every step of the way. It’s different, but it’s a great learning curve for me. And even little things, I’ve not done it completely yet, but learning the language and stuff like that, learning the culture, it’s all enjoyable for me.”
Reports claim that the England international is keen to extend his stay in Catalonia and coming to the fore when Barcelona need him the most could be enough to force the club to trigger his release clause.
Should Rashford manage to deliver for Barcelona in this last stretch of the season and aid their pursuit of titles, he will not only have managed to earn a place in the hearts of Blaugrana fans – he will also have made a case ahead of the upcoming World Cup in North America.
While other players struggle to find opportunities to prove themselves elsewhere, Rashford has been presented with a make-or-break moment. Grasp this opportunity with both hands and he will have laid the foundation to revive a career that seemed to be going sideways before his move to Catalonia.
