Arsenal vs Manchester City Carabao Cup final outcome could have wider effect on the title race

Sunday’s clash at Wembley will see the two Premier League aspirants lock horns ahead of what is expected to be an intense title race after the international break

It might be considered the least-coveted of the silverware up for grabs for English powerhouses during a season, but the outcome of the upcoming Carabao Cup final could decide more than just the trophy that either Arsenal or Manchester City will lift at Wembley on Sunday.

The arrival of the international break marks the beginning of the final stretch of the season, where defences tighten up, attacks aim to be clinical in front goal and Premier League aspirants set sights on the ultimate prize.

Only eight rounds of league matches will remain once the teams return from the break, with the Gunners topping the table and Manchester City trailing by nine points. Yet, City do have a game in hand, with their postponed clash against Crystal Palace yet to be rescheduled due to Pep Guardiola side’s congested calendar.

With the 2025/26 campaign hitting a crucial point, Arsenal are looking for their first trophy in six years, while Manchester City are set to compete for their sixth Carabao Cup trophy over the last decade. But Sunday’s result could carry significance beyond the trophy, potentially affecting the two-team race for the Premier League title.

Arsenal want it all

Mikel Arteta may have brushed aside quadrable whispers, but everyone at Arsenal is aware that conversation will intensify should they clinch the title on Sunday. Having put together a formidable side under the Spanish tactician, the Gunners are rightfully regarded front-runners across all the competitions they participate in.

They became the first team to win all eight Champions League league phase games before eliminating Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16. Having extended their unbeaten run to 10 games in Europe’s top competition, they have set up a quarter-final clash against Sporting CP and a potential qualification to the semi-finals would see them take on either Barcelona or Atlético Madrid.

Arsenal may have failed to impress in recent outings, but they have kept finding ways to get the job done even in games where they seemed likely to slip up – a true trait of a team that has managed to build a champion mentality through adversity.

The Carabao Cup final will take place at Wembley Stadium

Meanwhile, boasting both the best home and away record in the league, Arteta’s side have what it takes to go all the way for the first time since 2003/04. Apart from their clash away at Manchester City, none of their remaining league games are against a top-eight team, allowing them to juggle between competitions down the stretch.

As for the FA Cup, a victory over Championship side Southampton straight after the break would sealed them a spot in the semi-finals of the competition – just two wins away from clinching the trophy.

A potential triumph in Sunday’s decider will send a message throughout Europe ahead of the run-in, a statement of intention by a team that may have not managed a trophy in six years, but are eager to win them all this term. To do so, however, they will first need to go past a beast licking its wounds.

Man City’s golden opportunity to flip the switch

Manchester City’s campaign has been characterised by inconstancy. Guardiola’s side have fell short of expectations despite spending big both in the summer and winter transfer windows. The Sky Blues may have reached the FA Cup quarterfinals, where they will face Liverpool after the break, but they have been eliminated from the Champions League at the hands of an injury-plagued Real Madrid.

An 11-game unbeaten run across all competitions was followed by a draw at third-bottom West Ham in the league and back-to-back defeats to Los Blancos in Europe, as Man City have won just one of their last six matches heading into the final.

On a positive note, Sunday’s duel provides the team with a first-class opportunity to turn their season around. A potential victory against their fellow league contenders would deliver a significant boost in morale for a Manchester City who haven’t beaten Arsenal since April 2023.

Yet history is in their favour in the Carabao Cup, where Manchester City have won all their last four duels against the Gunners, including a 3-0 triumph in the 2018 final.

Meanwhile, a victory in the aforementioned game against Palace would see them trim the deficit to six points in the league and a potential victory in their home clash against Arsenal could further mount the pressure on the Gunners.

All Manchester City need ahead of this crucial last stretch of the season in an injection of confidence. And what better way to get one than by beating the team aiming for the Premier League throne – one that the Sky Blues occupied in six of the last eight seasons.
