Barcelona loanee’s future is currently uncertain after suffering an injury that could sideline him for up to two months
Marc-André ter Stegen has suffered a serious muscle injury that could rule him out for up to two months, placing his loan spell at Girona in serious doubt and opening the door to an early return to Barcelona.
Reports in Spain indicate that initial medical assessments are negative, with concerns over a hamstring tear and possible tendon involvement.
According to Cadena SER programme Què T’hi Jugues, the German goalkeeper’s injury is more severe than first feared.
In the absence of an official medical statement, Girona are already considering contingency plans, including the possibility of terminating the loan agreement if the recovery timeline proves too long for the remainder of the season.
Ter Stegen moved to Girona during the winter window in search of regular minutes after losing his starting role at Barcelona.
With head coach Hansi Flick backing Joan García as his first choice, the German knew consistent playing time was essential if he was to remain in contention for Germany ahead of the summer international tournament.
Girona emerged as an attractive destination. The club were looking to strengthen their goalkeeping department in the fight to stay clear of relegation trouble, while Barcelona were able to reduce a significant portion of Ter Stegen’s salary.
For the goalkeeper himself, the move offered a chance to feel important again and regain match rhythm after a difficult period.
That plan unravelled almost immediately, as Ter Stegen made his debut for Girona on January 26 against Getafe, producing an impressive display at Montilivi.
In the closing moments of the 1–1 draw, he made a crucial save that preserved a point and hinted at the immediate impact he could have.
He retained his place for the following match away to Real Oviedo at Estadio Carlos Tartiere, but the night ended very differently.
During the match, Ter Stegen suffered the muscle injury that has now sidelined him and Girona went on to lose 1–0.
Girona set to make a decision on Ter Stegen’s future
According to SER, Girona have not ruled out reversing the deal altogether if Ter Stegen’s absence stretches across much of the remaining campaign.
Other reports suggest the club could even explore the market for a last-minute solution should they decide they cannot wait for his recovery.
