The Cypriot club have parted ways with the Spanish manager who led them to a historic victory at Selhurst Park earlier this season
AEK Larnaca have dismissed head coach Imanol Idiakez just days before their UEFA Europa Conference League round of 16 clash with Crystal Palace.
The decision brings an end to Idiakez’s third spell in charge of the Cypriot side, having previously managed the club between June 2016 and May 2018, January 2019 and December 2019, and most recently from May 2025 until March 2026.
Despite overseeing an impressive European campaign this season, recent domestic results ultimately proved decisive. AEK currently sit third in the Cypriot First Division, eight points behind leaders Omonoia, but a run of two defeats followed by a home draw against Olympiakos Nicosia has prompted the club’s hierarchy to act.
Under Idiakez’s guidance in his latest tenure, AEK enjoyed one of the most memorable nights in their history. The club finished inside the top eight of the Conference League’s league phase unbeaten, including a stunning 0-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in October, becoming the first and only Cypriot side to win a competitive match in England.
However, that European success was not enough to secure his future, with the club releasing a statement to confirm his departure on Wednesday.

Crystal Palace face AEK Larnaca in Conference League reunion
The timing adds further intrigue ahead of AEK’s reunion with Crystal Palace in the last 16. The first leg is scheduled for March 12 at Selhurst Park, with the return leg in Larnaca on March 19.
Palace will be wary of a side that has already shown it can cause problems in south London, even if they will now be preparing to face a team under new leadership.
