The Bournemouth boss confirms the USMNT international will miss Friday night’s Vitality Stadium fixture, as the Cherries look to extend a ten-match unbeaten run
After being absent from the squad during last weekend’s scoreless draw at Turf Moor, Tyler Adams has been officially ruled out of Bournemouth’s clash against Manchester United on Friday.
Coach Andoni Iraola addressed the media on Thursday, confirming that a quadriceps injury sustained in training prior to the Burnley trip will keep the American sidelined.
The timing of the injury is particularly frustrating for Adams, who had recently completed a successful return from a torn MCL suffered against the same Manchester United side in December.
The severity of the issue was underscored by Adams’ exclusion from the United States men’s national team (USMNT) squad for their upcoming March friendlies against Belgium and Portugal.
Mauricio Pochettino, recently appointed as the United States manager, noted earlier this week that the midfielder is expected to be out for approximately two to three weeks.
Iraola echoed this timeline, suggesting the club would use the upcoming three-week international break to ensure a full recovery.
“Tyler is not going to be available, as you suppose, because he hasn’t been in the squad for the US,” Iraola explained, indicating that the club is prioritising long-term health over a hurried return for the Friday night spotlight.

Looking to extend unbeaten run
The absence of Adams creates a tactical headache for Iraola, especially as the Cherries look to protect a remarkable ten-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League.
The depth of the Bournemouth midfield is being pushed to its limit, with Lewis Cook also confirmed to be unavailable for the United clash.
Iraola noted that Cook is “still not ready” and will join Adams in using the post-match break to recuperate. With Julio Soler and Justin Kluivert also remains sidelined, the Cherries may be forced to rely on a makeshift central pairing, likely featuring Ryan Christie and Alex Scott, to contend with a resurgent United side.
“Lewis Cook is still not ready. We have almost three weeks now without a game [after Manchester United] so we want to use that space for him to recover properly and be ready for the next one,” Iraola added.
Manchester United arrive at the Vitality Stadium in formidable form of their own, having secured seven victories in their last nine league outings.
While Michael Carrick‘s squad deals with its own defensive absences, including Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt, the Red Devils will look to capitalise on a Bournemouth spine missing its primary high-octane enforcer.
As the Premier League enters its final stretch toward the 2026 World Cup summer, Bournemouth currently sits comfortably in mid-table, while United continues to chase a top-four finish.
Adams will now turn his focus to an April 11 return against Arsenal, as he aims to prove his fitness ahead of the USMNT’s World Cup preparations in May.
