Newcastle await clarity after Anthony Gordon suffered a first-half injury during the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Manchester City, with his availability now in doubt
Newcastle United were dealt another concern on Wednesday night as Anthony Gordon was forced off injured during the first half of their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City that finished 3-1 on the night (5-1 aggregate).
The incident occurred with City already cruising at 3-0, effectively ending Newcastle’s hopes of a comeback. Gordon appeared to pull up off the ball, sitting himself down on the pitch while City were in possession and with no opponent in close proximity.
Play was halted shortly afterwards, with Gordon receiving treatment before eventually being withdrawn in the 44th minute. Harvey Barnes was introduced in his place just before half-time, as Eddie Howe was forced into an unplanned change.
It capped a frustrating evening for the England international, who had earlier missed Newcastle’s clearest opening of the match. With City 2-0 up in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg, Gordon found space in the box and struck a left-footed effort on the bounce, but failed to make clean contact and saw his shot comfortably saved by James Trafford.
The injury added to a difficult night for Newcastle, who were unable to stem City’s dominance and exited the competition in emphatic fashion. With the tie effectively settled early on, attention quickly turned to Gordon’s condition and what it could mean for the weeks ahead.
Anthony Gordon injury update: Eddie Howe suspects hamstring
At this stage, the full extent of Gordon’s injury remains unclear. He was seen holding the back of his left leg while seated on the pitch, raising immediate concerns of a potential hamstring issue.
And after the game, Eddie Howe also pointed to a likely hamstring problem, causing concern over Gordon’s availability for the coming matches.
“Looks like a hamstring problem, I don’t quite know how bad it is,” Howe said after the defeat to Man City.
“It was enough for him to come off, so that’s a worry.”
If that is confirmed, Gordon would almost certainly miss Newcastle’s next Premier League fixture, with recovery timelines varying significantly depending on the severity. Mild strains can sideline players for a short period, while more serious hamstring injuries can result in absences measured in weeks or even months.
Newcastle’s next outing comes on Saturday, February 7, when they host Brentford at St James’ Park in a 17:30 GMT kick-off. The Magpies currently sit 11th in the Premier League table and are looking to respond after a heavy 4-1 defeat away to Liverpool in their last league match.
Further assessment in the coming days will determine whether Gordon is available for that clash or faces time on the sidelines.
