Are Barcelona suffering from Raphinha-dependence? The shocking stat that proves his importance

Barcelona’s scintillating form appears to pause in the absence of the Brazilian winger as echoes of ‘Messi-dependencia’ return to haunt the Catalan club

Barcelona’s over-reliance on individual brilliance has resurfaced this season, only now it’s Raphinha rather than Leo Messi providing the crutch.

The pattern this season for the Catalans evokes memories of the ‘Messi-dependencia’ era, when the Spanish media would persistently point to Barcelona‘s dependence on the Argentine genius whenever a result would not go their way.

A shocking statistic hints at an uncomfortable truth regarding Raphinha and his impact on the team, as every single one of Barcelona‘s three league defeats this campaign occurred without the Brazilian winger in the squad, as did their humiliating 4-0 Copa del Rey collapse against Atlético Madrid last week.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s clash with Girona, where Raphinha returns after recovering from an adductor strain, Hansi Flick highlighted just how important the former Leeds United winger is to the team.

“We miss him when he’s not there, and we see in training how he elevates the team’s dynamism and the sharpness of the pace,” Flick said. “And I’ve said it more than once: for me, he was the best player in the world last season.”

Those comments seemed calibrated partly as a challenge to the rest of Barcelona’s squad, reminding them of the standards Raphinha sets whilst highlighting their collective failure to maintain similar levels in his absence.

Defensive work rate separates Raphinha from alternatives

The 28-year-old’s importance extends far beyond his 13 goals and five assists across 22 appearances this season. What truly makes him irreplaceable is his defensive contribution, something none of Barcelona‘s other attacking players replicate with comparable intensity or effectiveness.

Raphinha‘s pressing triggers Barcelona’s defensive transitions. His willingness to track back creates balance down the left flank that allows left-back Alejandro Balde to push forward aggressively.

Balde suffers particularly when Raphinha isn’t available. The Brazilian provides crucial cover and support down that side, helping defend against opposition attacks whilst creating overloads when Barcelona attack.

None of the other wingers show comparable dedication or success in stopping and harassing opponents after turnovers.

Flick‘s tactical system relies heavily on coordinated pressing and defensive intensity across the front line. When Raphinha plays, Barcelona’s pressing scheme functions cohesively.

Without him, gaps emerge that opponents exploit, leading to the kind of results Barcelona suffered during his recent absence.

Cautious management brings reward as injury heals

Raphinha hasn’t featured since the Albacete match, with the adductor strain keeping him sidelined through multiple fixtures. Flick resisted temptation to rush him back for the midweek Copa del Rey tie against Los Rojiblancos, prioritising long-term availability over short-term desperation.

That decision looked questionable when Barcelona collapsed 4-0 in their worst defeat for years, a result that exposed their vulnerability without Raphinha‘s leadership and work rate.

However, Flick’s patience appears vindicated now that the Brazil international has recovered fully rather than suffering a setback that might have extended his absence considerably.

Whether he starts at Montilivi remains uncertain. Flick may deploy him from the bench initially, managing his minutes carefully after weeks away from match action.

However, with Marcus Rashford unavailable due to injury, Raphinha could feature earlier and more extensively than might otherwise be prudent.
