While Barcelona have Alessandro Bastoni as their leading summer target, another Serie A centre-back is being monitored as a cost-effective secondary option

Barcelona’s recruitment strategy for the upcoming transfer window is beginning to take shape, with the search for a left-footed central defender becoming a priority for Hansi Flick’s second season.

While the club has successfully navigated its way to an impending LaLiga title, the technical department remains focused on filling the void left by the departure of Iñigo Martínez last summer.

Alessandro Bastoni remains the dream target for the board, yet the €70 million valuation set by Inter Milan has created a major worry regarding the feasibility of the deal.

Meanwhile, Jhon Lucumí has risen to the top of the “Plan B” shortlist, offering a profile that combines physical dominance with a significantly more manageable financial package for the Catalan giants.

The 27-year-old Bologna defender, who has also attracted interest by Premier League side Sunderland, has enjoyed a standout 2025/26 campaign in Serie A, establishing himself as a pillar of a side that has consistently punched above its weight in European competition.

Lucumí’s current contract in Italy runs until 2027, a factor that robs Bologna of significant leverage in any upcoming negotiations.

Reports suggest that Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has already gathered extensive data on the Colombian, who is expected to be available for a fee in the region of €28 million.

Flick evaluates defensive depth as Bastoni talks stall

The pursuit of Bastoni remains active, but early discussions with the Nerazzurri have reportedly failed to yield a breakthrough.

Inter are under no immediate pressure to sell their Italian international, whereas Bologna are increasingly resigned to losing Lucumí this summer.

Flick is reportedly said to be particularly impressed by Lucumí’s recovery pace and aerial presence, traits that would provide a necessary bulk to a backline that has occasionally struggled against high-intensity transitions this term.

While other names such as Micky van de Ven and Nico Schlotterbeck have been mentioned in recent scouting reports, the hierarchy views Lucumí as the most realistic and “cut-price” solution to their defensive puzzle.

The club is currently exploring various financing models, including the potential sale of Ferran Torres or Ronald Araújo, to ensure they can act decisively once the window opens.

As the squad prepares for their trip to Pamplona, the board is working tirelessly to finalise the commercial deals required to return to the 1:1 rule.

Reaching this milestone would allow Deco to operate with greater freedom, potentially making a late play for Bastoni or Lucumí more feasible.
