Pulisic’s poor form in front of goal deepens as USMNT captain struggles ahead of this summer’s World Cup in the United States

Christian Pulisic is facing a rough goal drought for both club and country, with the AC Milan forward having failed to find the net since the start of 2026.

The American talisman’s recent form has become a significant talking point as the United States prepares to host the World Cup this June.

Following a 2-0 defeat to Portugal in Atlanta last Tuesday, Pulisic has now gone eight consecutive international appearances without a goal, a dry spell that stretches back to late 2024.

Despite a blistering start to the Serie A campaign where he netted eight times before the winter break, his touch has deserted him in the new year.

A 1-0 loss to Napoli on Monday marked his 14th consecutive match for Milan without a goal, leaving the 27-year-old visibly searching for a clinical touch in front of goal.

The frustration was etched on Pulisic’s face throughout his 45-minute shift against Portugal in Georgia. Deployed in an experimental No.9 role by Mauricio Pochettino, the captain struggled to impose himself in the penalty area, often appearing isolated and out of rhythm.

“It’s frustrating,” Pulisic said after the game. “But I am just going to stay positive. I have a lot of big things ahead and I know I’m going to get to the other side and things are going to click.”

Pochettino maintains faith in captain’s quality

While external scrutiny is mounting, USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino has remained steadfast in his support of his most high-profile player. The Argentine coach argued that the captain’s visible irritation is a positive indicator of his high standards and commitment to the national cause.

“He feels frustrated,” Pochettino told reporters following the Portugal loss. “But that’s what we want and what we expect. He was fighting, he was committed in the phases that we demanded more [of him] and then with the ball, he is going to score. Because he has that quality.”

Pochettino’s confidence is rooted in the belief that a single breakthrough will open the floodgates for both the player and the team. The manager insisted that Pulisic’s return to Milan would provide the necessary environment for a reset before the World Cup begins.

“I am sure that he is going to go back to his club, and in the moment he is going to score, he is going to score again,” he added.
