Wales boss reflects on mentor Gary Speed’s impact as his side prepare for crucial Bosnia-Herzegovina clash in World Cup qualifying play-offs

Wales national football team head coach Craig Bellamy has paid an emotional tribute to the late Gary Speed, revealing the profound influence his former manager continues to have on his career, ahead of the crucial World Cup playoff with Bosnia-Herzegovina on Thursday.

Speaking in the upcoming documentary Craig Bellamy: Byd Y Bêl A Mi, which airs on S4C on March 23, Bellamy reflected on the legacy Speed left behind following his time in charge of the national team.

“Gary was only here for a short period but his impact was big. His impact was so big. He just had that aura about him,” Bellamy said.

Speed’s tenure as Wales manager may have been brief, but his influence is still deeply embedded within the Football Association of Wales and the team’s modern identity.

“A lot of what you see now with the organisation with the Welsh FA was his impact. I see our beliefs are quite aligned and it gave me a real hunger for the game,” the former Manchester City forward added, as quoted by Wales247.co.uk.

Wales look to honour Speed’s legacy on the pitch

Bellamy, who captained Wales during his playing career, is now tasked with leading the nation through one of its most important fixtures in recent history. Wales face Bosnia-Herzegovina in a World Cup play-off semi-final on Thursday, with a place in the final at stake.

The documentary also features insights from key Wales figures, including Joe Allen, who highlighted how Speed’s influence has carried forward into Bellamy’s leadership.

“The message from Craig was to move on with the things we’d learnt from Gary,” Allen explained.

Current defender Ben Davies also praised Bellamy’s management style, saying: “Craig manages people well. The person is the most important thing with him – not only the football.”

Bellamy himself is embracing the challenge of management with the same intensity that defined his playing days.

“I’m enjoying this. No hesitation. And I’m going to enjoy it no matter where it takes me – defeats, wins, draws – I don’t care where this road goes, but I’m going to enjoy every second of it.”

As Wales prepare for a defining week, the influence of Gary Speed continues to shape their journey both on and off the pitch.

Who do Wales play if they beat Bosnia-Herzegovina?

Victory would set up a decisive clash in Cardiff against either Italy or Northern Ireland on March 31, with a spot at the World Cup on the line.

Italy are the strong favourites, ranked 12th in the FIFA World Rankings, while Northern Ireland are 69th.
