Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone backs Antoine Griezmann amid growing Orlando City MLS links and fresh shirt number speculation

Diego Simeone has effectively handed Antoine Griezmann the freedom to decide his future as speculation linking the French forward with a move to Orlando City continues to gather pace.

Speaking ahead of Atlético Madrid’s Champions League playoff second leg against Club Brugge, Simeone was asked directly about the increasing rumours of a potential MLS switch.

“I’m not going to speak for him. I love him very much. We’ve talked about many things, and I told him what I think,” Simeone said.

“I hope he chooses what he thinks is best and what he wants because he deserves whatever he wants.”

The Argentine coach doubled down on that stance, adding: “He’s in a position where he deserves to choose what he wants to do.”

Orlando links intensify amid roster clues

Talk of a move to Orlando City has accelerated in recent days. The MLS side hold Griezmann’s discovery rights – giving them priority in negotiations – and crucially have a Designated Player spot available should they formalise their interest.

Fuel was added to the speculation by a curious squad number change. Until Orlando’s final pre-season friendly on February 15, Brazilian forward Tiago had been wearing the No.7 shirt and even posed with it in a club-approved social media shoot.

However, in the MLS season opener against New York Red Bulls, Tiago appeared in the No.11 jersey instead, scoring a late consolation in a 2-1 defeat.

The change has prompted suggestions that Orlando may be keeping the iconic No.7 shirt vacant for Griezmann, who has become synonymous with the number at Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and with the French national team.

Despite the growing noise, Atletico sporting director Mateu Alemany has publicly downplayed the reports, stating he is unaware of any imminent exit.

Griezmann remains under contract until 2027 and has continued to contribute this season, even if he is no longer guaranteed a starting berth in every match.

Simeone’s comments, however, indicate a willingness to respect the player’s wishes should a formal offer arrive. After more than a decade of service across two spells in Madrid – and having become the club’s all-time leading scorer – Griezmann’s legacy at Atletico is secure.

Whether that future lies in LaLiga or MLS now appears to rest firmly in the hands of the 34-year-old himself.
