The Brazilian left the pitch with discomfort late in Newcastle’s 1-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as depleted midfield faces further blow

Newcastle United‘s crucial 1-2 victory at Tottenham came with a potentially significant cost as Bruno Guimarães limped off late in the match with what coach Eddie Howe fears could be a hamstring injury.

The concern adds another layer of worry to an already depleted midfield situation at St. James’ Park.

Guimaraes had only recently returned from an ankle problem before experiencing discomfort during Tuesday’s match.

Goals from Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey, sandwiched around Archie Gray‘s equaliser, secured Newcastle‘s third away league win of the campaign and ended a three-match losing streak. But the triumph may prove hollow if their Brazilian midfielder faces another extended absence.

“Not sure,” Howe said when asked about Guimarães after the match. “He’s a little bit worried. He said he’s never had a problem with his hamstrings before so is it cramp, was it a muscle problem? It probably feels more of an injury to me but let’s wait and see and try and stay positive at this moment.”

The uncertainty surrounding Guimarães‘ condition creates immediate problems for Howe’s team selection in upcoming fixtures.

Newcastle faces Aston Villa in the FA Cup on Saturday, followed by a Europa League clash with Qarabag and a daunting league trip to Manchester City.

Midfield crisis deepens for Magpies

Losing Guimarães would devastate Newcastle’s midfield depth at precisely the wrong moment. Joelinton is already sidelined with a groin injury, removing another key presence from the centre of the pitch. The Brazilian’s absence has forced Howe into tactical adjustments that he’d prefer to avoid.

Lewis Miley‘s situation compounds the crisis. The 19-year-old suffered a setback recovering from the leg injury that’s kept him out since Newcastle’s draw with Paris Saint-Germain.

“We’re missing [Miley] massively,” Howe said. “He’s a huge player for us. Of course, there’s Joelinton in our midfield, and they’re two high-level players.”

Medical staff now expect Miley to miss the Villa match, the Qarabag fixture, and potentially the Manchester City game as well.

That leaves Howe scrambling for options if Guimarães joins the injury list. Howe’s limited midfield choices could force him into reshuffling his entire tactical approach or relying on players in unfamiliar positions.

Neither scenario inspires confidence heading into a packed fixture schedule across multiple competitions.
