European and South American champions meet in Lusail with silverware, prestige and crucial 2026 World Cup momentum on the line
Spain and Argentina will meet in the 2026 Finalissima, a one-off match between the reigning champions of Europe and South America that has quickly regained status as one of international football’s premium events.
Spain earned their place by winning UEFA EURO 2024, while Argentina qualified as Copa América 2024 champions, setting up a glamour showdown with World Cup momentum and continental pride on the line.
UEFA and CONMEBOL have framed it as more than a friendly, a trophy match designed to crown a champion of champions in the build up to the 2026 World Cup.
When and where is the 2026 Finalissima?
The Finalissima will be played on Friday, March 27, 2026 at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, the 2022 World Cup final venue.
The stadium, of course, brings back the fondest of memories for Argentina as they defeated France to win the country’s fourth ever World Cup trophy in one of the greatest matches in football history – a 3-3 draw after extra-time with Argentina claiming glory after a penalty shootout.
Kick-off is set for 21:00 local time in Lusail (AST) corresponds to 14:00 ET and 11:00 PT in the United States.
In Central European Time, that’s 19:00, while in the United Kingdom, kick-off will be at 18:00
As of now, specific U.S. broadcast details for Finalissima 2026 have not been officially announced by UEFA or CONMEBOL. UEFA’s official coverage page notes that broadcast information will be published once rights agreements are confirmed.
Spain vs Argentina head-to-head record
Spain and Argentina have not faced each other often in competitive fixtures, but their meetings this century provide a useful snapshot of how the match up has swung in different cycles. Since 2000, they have played four times, all friendlies, with Spain winning three and Argentina winning one.
Spain beat Argentina 2-1 in October 2006 and again 2-1 in November 2009, before Argentina responded with a 4-1 win in September 2010 in Buenos Aires.

Their most recent meeting came in March 2018, when Spain won 6-1 in Madrid. Across those four matches, Spain have scored 12 goals to Argentina’s seven.
What is the Finalissima?
The Finalissima is the modern revival of an older idea, the Artemio Franchi Cup, which previously staged intercontinental champion versus champion clashes in 1985 and 1993.
UEFA and CONMEBOL relaunched the concept in 2022 under the Finalissima brand, turning it into an official showpiece between the winners of EURO and Copa América.
“The Finalissima brings together two continental champions in one of football’s most prestigious occasions, highlighting the game’s truly global reach and the enduring bond between our confederations. We look forward to a memorable night of world-class football and celebration,” UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said in December.
Argentina are the defending champions, having beaten Italy 3-0 at Wembley in 2022, with goals from Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria and Paulo Dybala.
“This emblematic match is more than a competition; it is a symbol of cooperation and respect between confederations, and an opportunity for fans to enjoy a truly historic event,” CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez added.
Spain vs Argentina team news
Mikel Merino is ruled out with a stress fracture in his foot, with uncertainty about the exact return timeline. Meanwhile, the game could also come too soon for Nico Williams, who has been sidelined indefinitely due to a persistent pubalgia issue.
For Argentina, Juan Foyth is set to miss out on the upcoming clash. The bigger talking point in the last few days has been Lautaro Martínez, who has sparked concern after suffering a muscle problem. Yet, the Inter striker is expected to be fit for the Finalissima.
Lamine Yamal vs Leo Messi
The 2026 Finalissima is likely to see the first ever meeting between Lamine Yamal and Leo Messi, two players at different ends of their football careers, with many seeing the young Spaniard as the heir to the Argentine’s throne.
Messi left FC Barcelona in 2021, while Yamal made his debut for the first team in 2023, with the latter since going onto become one of the top players in the world and, since the start of the current season, dons the famous no.10 that the Argentine legend wore so successfully with the Blaugrana.
