The Barcelona coach admitted St James’ Park intensity rattled his players during a difficult draw against the Magpies on Tyneside

The St James’ Park atmosphere proved to be a key factor in Barcelona‘s 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in their Champions League round of 16 first leg on Tuesday.

Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was remarkably candid about the difficulties his players faced in such a hostile environment.

While the Catalan giants managed to leave Tyneside with a point, Flick admitted that the sheer volume and relentless pressure from the home supporters played a significant role in disrupting his team’s usual composure and tactical execution.

Flick noted that the environment created by the Newcastle faithful forced his side into uncharacteristic errors throughout the match.

Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the lead in the 86th minute, but Lamine Yamal converted from the spot deep into stoppage time in the first leg of the Champions League tie between the two sides.

Losing possession under pressure

Reflecting on the performance immediately following the final whistle, Flick offered a direct critique of his team’s inability to settle into their passing rhythm. He shared his perspective on the challenge by stating.

“I’m happier with the result,” he said after the game. “We didn’t play well with the ball. Without it, we were good, we defended together as a team. That was positive.

“It wasn’t easy playing in this stadium, with that pressure and atmosphere. We made a lot of mistakes under that pressure, and we need to improve.”

The German remained encouraged by the defensive unity shown by his players, noting that they remained disciplined and compact when they were under siege without the ball.

We lost possession a lot,” Flick added. “They have fast players. But I am happy with the defensive work.

“Before the match, I wouldn’t have thought it was a bad result. There are no excuses. We didn’t want to take any risks with Eric [Garcia] because he’s an important player for us. [Ronald] Araujo played well, and when Xavi Espart came on, he did too.

“It’s not easy to play against this team. We have to keep improving because we have great potential.”

Following Newcastle’s solid outing against one of the front-runners to win the Champions League, Eddie Howe stressed that his team have proved they can compete with the elite of European football.

“In the cold light of day when we wake up tomorrow, we’ll see the positives. The tie is very much alive, we played really well,” he said.

“We showed our qualities. We’ve been really competitive. The challenge is we need more on a consistent basis. We’ve showed we can play against the very best when we’re at our best.”
