The England international missed out on the friendly against Japan due to a minor issue in training and is now a doubt to face Real Madrid
Vincent Kompany has confirmed that Harry Kane will miss Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga encounter with SC Freiburg on Saturday after the striker sustained an ankle injury during the international break.
The absence of the division’s most prolific marksman presents a significant tactical hurdle for the Bavarian giants as they enter a season-defining stretch of fixtures.
Kane, who has been in relentless form with 31 goals in just 26 league appearances this term, was forced to sit out England’s recent friendly against Japan on Tuesday.
While the 32-year-old had initially joined up with the national squad in high spirits, a physical setback during the training cycle has necessitated a period of rest.
“Harry trained well until Sunday, then he felt his ankle with the national team,” Kompany explained during his Friday press briefing. “That affects tomorrow’s game – he won’t be available.
“That’s a medical issue, so I won’t go into too much detail. But what I can say is we haven’t talked about his calf.”
Despite the domestic blow, the head coach remains optimistic that his talisman will lead the line for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid.
“Nevertheless, I’m positive about Tuesday. It’s not great, I’d like him to play against Freiburg, but as things stand today that won’t be possible,” Kompany added.
The loss of Kane’s clinical edge, further evidenced by his 10 goals in nine European outings this season, comes at a time when Bayern are navigating a congested schedule of seven matches in three weeks.

Alphonso Davies injury update
However, the mood at Bayern Munich has been buoyed by the return of several key figures who utilised the international window to complete their rehabilitation.
Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies have both been passed fit to rejoin the matchday squad, providing Vincent Kompany with much-needed reinforcement as the club pursues silverware on multiple fronts.
The Canadian full-back’s return is particularly timely, offering the pace and defensive recovery that will be essential for the upcoming continental showdown with the Spanish champions.
While the return of Musiala and Davies provides a vertical threat that Bayern have occasionally lacked during their recent injury crisis, Kompany warned that their involvement must be handled with caution.
The Bayern boss noted that while both are options for the immediate future, their ability to sustain high-intensity performance over 90 minutes remains to be seen.
“Whether they can play three games in a week or a full 90 minutes is another question,” Kompany admitted. “But we no longer have the luxury of that much choice. We have to win. And everyone has to deliver to the max and show their best level.”
