Villa captain back after seven-week absence as Unai Emery’s side prepare for Europa League last-16 first leg in France
Aston Villa have received a timely boost ahead of their Europa League round of 16 tie against LOSC Lille, with captain John McGinn returning to the squad after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The Scotland international has missed the past seven weeks after suffering an injury during Villa’s Premier League meeting with Everton in January. His absence has been felt both on and off the pitch as Unai Emery’s side navigated a demanding run of fixtures.
However, McGinn is now back in training and travelled with the squad to France ahead of the first leg at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, raising hopes he could feature as Villa look to gain an advantage in the knockout tie.
Speaking during the club’s pre-match press conference, teammate Morgan Rogers reflected on what the team has missed during McGinn’s absence.
“First and foremost, probably the jokes, he’s the funniest person in the room and that’s probably one thing we’ve missed,” he said.
Rogers highlighted the leadership qualities McGinn brings to the dressing room, describing the midfielder as a key figure in Villa’s identity.

“It’s tough when such a big character, such a big player, who’s been for us for so many years at the club even before I was here, it can be hard, it can be difficult and you’ve got to try your best to try and fill that gap.”
McGinn’s influence extends beyond his performances on the pitch, with Rogers stressing the importance of his personality within the squad.
“But it’s hard when he’s such a big character and personality.
“So, it’s massive to have him back. He puts a smile on people’s faces, he plays with that smile, wears the badge on his sleeve and he brings a lot to our team.
“It’s really nice to have him back.”
Villa will now hope their captain’s return can provide an emotional lift as they prepare for one of the most important matches of their European campaign.
