Manchester United injury update: Mazraoui illness, Martinez absence, Mount returns

Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick provides latest on Mazraoui, Lisandro Martinez and Mason Mount ahead of Bournemouth clash

Manchester United have been handed a mixed injury update ahead of Friday night’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth, with Michael Carrick confirming both short-term setbacks and positive returns.

The Red Devils head into the fixture full of confidence following their 3-1 win over Aston Villa, but there are a few concerns for the interim boss to manage as his side look to strengthen their hold on third place.

Noussair Mazraoui emerged as a fresh doubt after missing training at Carrington on Wednesday. The full-back has been dealing with illness rather than injury, casting uncertainty over his availability for the south-coast encounter.

Carrick clarified the situation in his pre-match press conference, easing fears of anything more serious.

“[Mazraoui] is just ill. He just wasn’t feeling too good today,” he said.

Defensive concerns for Carrick

There was less encouraging news regarding Lisandro Martinez, who will not feature against Bournemouth despite making progress in his recovery.

The Argentine defender remains sidelined for this match but is expected to return shortly after, with Carrick suggesting a comeback is not far away.

“[Lisandro is] closer, a lot closer. He’s getting there, so after this one. I think he’ll be alright.”

United are also without Matthijs de Ligt and Patrick Dorgu, both of whom continue to work their way back from injuries.

Carrick admitted frustration over De Ligt’s situation, with the Dutchman struggling to overcome a persistent issue.

“It’s similar really [with De Ligt] and frustrating for Matta,” Carrick explained.

“He’s obviously trying to work to get back but it’s just the back issue, really, that’s proving difficult. We’ll keep working as hard as we can, to get him back as quickly as we can.”

“[Dorgu] is a bit further down the line,” he added.

Mount boost but unlikely to start

There was, however, a positive update on Mason Mount. The midfielder is available again after returning to the squad last weekend, although he is not expected to start after being an unused substitute against Villa.

Mount did well in glimpses under Ruben Amorim, and will now be hoping he can finally impress new boss Carrick as United look to consolidate their grip on a Champions League spot.
