Man United boss confirms positive Mason Mount injury news as midfielder returns ahead of crucial Premier League clash with Aston Villa
Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick has delivered a positive injury update on Mason Mount ahead of Sunday’s crucial Premier League showdown with Aston Villa.
United host Villa at Old Trafford in a match that could prove decisive in the race for Champions League qualification. Both sides head into the weekend level on 51 points after 29 matches, with Manchester United currently occupying third place on goal difference (+11) while Villa sit fourth (+5).
With Chelsea and Liverpool just three points behind the pair, any slip-up could have major consequences in what has become an increasingly tight battle for the top four.
Carrick’s side will be looking to respond after suffering a 2-1 defeat away at Newcastle United in their last outing. The loss ended an impressive 11-match unbeaten run in the league and halted a strong run of form that had seen United climb firmly into the Champions League places.
The clash with Villa also comes after an 11-day break for the Red Devils, giving Carrick valuable time on the training ground ahead of a demanding final stretch of the campaign.
Mason Mount injury over
During his pre-match press conference, Carrick confirmed that Mount has returned to training with the squad following his recent injury lay-off.

“Mason is back with the group, which is fantastic. He’s an important player for us, Mason, and to have him back and involved is a good step for us.
“He is not 100% in terms of back, because he’s only trained a very small amount of time, but he’s back and that’s good for us so we’ll see whether he’s involved or not on Sunday, but it’s a big step for him so we’re happy with that. Yeah, that’s it in terms of players coming back for now.”
Mount’s return will be a welcome boost for Carrick as United prepare for a key period in the season, though the midfielder’s involvement against Aston Villa remains uncertain given his limited training time.
Three United defenders remain out
United will still be without several defenders for the match, with Patrick Dorgu, Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez all continuing to recover from injuries.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, arrive in Manchester after a demanding week of their own. Unai Emery’s side secured a 0-1 victory away to Lille in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie in France and now face a quick turnaround ahead of Sunday’s league encounter.
With the race for Champions League places heating up, the meeting between the two sides could have major implications for how the Premier League table looks heading into the final weeks of the season.
