Newcastle coach reveals talented midfielder faces couple of weeks out to avoid season-ending risk whilst Tino Livramento targets early March comeback

Jacob Ramsey is poised to return for Newcastle United’s Saturday clash with Everton after missing the midweek 3-2 Champions League victory over Qarabag due to a tight hamstring.

Head coach Eddie Howe expressed confidence the midfielder would resume training on Friday and feature in the afternoon Premier League fixture at St James’ Park.

“We hope Jacob will train today. So yes, fingers crossed he is back tomorrow,” Howe said during Friday’s press conference.

Ramsey’s swift return provides welcome relief for a squad still managing an extensive injury list that continues affecting team selection across multiple positions.

However, Howe delivered more cautious assessments regarding Lewis Miley‘s recovery timeline, revealing medical staff have advised extreme caution with the 19-year-old to prevent a minor issue escalating into something that could end his season prematurely.

“We’ve been advised to be really careful. A dead leg would usually be a few days, but there has been some muscle disruption,” Howe explained.

“He’s had a couple of injections, but I think we’re looking at a couple of weeks with Lewi. If we didn’t get this right, we would risk losing him for the rest of the season.”

At 19, Miley represents Newcastle‘s future in midfield, making protecting his long-term health paramount even when short-term availability would benefit the squad. Losing him for months by rushing his return would be catastrophic compared to exercising patience now for a few additional weeks.

Livramento closing in on March return

Tino Livramento‘s rehabilitation from his hamstring injury continues progressing according to schedule, with Howe revealing the right-back is due to rejoin first-team training next week and remains on track for early March availability.

“Tino will be in early March, we think he’s still on track for that. He has done really well,” Howe noted.

“He is back, not with us; he has been running separately. But he’s built up a good body of work. He has been training and running for a period of time. I don’t think there is too long to wait.”

Bruno Guimarães remains sidelined with the hamstring injury that will keep him out for approximately two months, though Howe noted the Brazilian captain is feeling “positive” about his recovery progress. That optimism suggests rehabilitation is proceeding smoothly even if his return remains weeks away.

Fabian Schär and Emil Krafth continue facing longer-term absences, leaving Newcastle’s defensive options stretched despite Ramsey’s midfield return and Livramento’s approaching availability.
