Newcastle optimistic about Sandro Tonali injury ahead of Sunderland clash

Despite a bruising Champions League exit in Spain, Newcastle may welcome back their Italian international for the season’s most anticipated home fixture against Sunderland

Sandro Tonali sparked fears of a long-term layoff for Newcastle United when he limped out of the Spotify Camp Nou against FC Barcelona on Wednesday night, clutching a groin injury during the club’s heavy Champions League defeat.

While coach Eddie Howe initially described the issue as a significant “problem,” subsequent scans conducted on Thursday have offered a glimmer of hope.

The damage is reportedly less severe than the coaching staff first feared, leaving the door open for Tonali to anchor the midfield in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland.

During his pre-match press conference on Friday morning, Howe remained cautious but optimistic about the 25-year-old’s availability.

“We will wait and see,” Howe told reporters, noting that the final decision would likely be made following a late fitness test on Saturday.

“Hopefully not as bad as first feared. We will see how he is and make a decision.”

Howe rules out trio until after the international break

While Tonali’s prognosis has improved, the news is less encouraging for the rest of Newcastle’s core. Club captain Bruno Guimarães, who has missed the last eight matches with a hamstring injury, will not be risked this weekend despite returning to the training ground following his rehabilitation in Brazil.

Fabian Schär is still recovering from an ankle injury that has sidelined him for the majority of 2026, and teenage standout Lewis Miley remains out with a persistent thigh issue.

Howe confirmed that all three players are now targeting a return to action following the upcoming two-week hiatus for international fixtures.

“It will be after the internationals for Lewis Miley, same for Bruno and also Fabian,” Howe stated, reinforcing his commitment to long-term player health over short-term derby gains.

This personnel shortage comes at a psychologically difficult moment for the Magpies, following their definitive exit from the Champions League on Wednesday.

Newcastle’s European journey ended in a devastating 7-2 second-leg loss to Barcelona (8-3 on aggregate), a match that saw the English side collapse in the second half despite a spirited first-half brace from Anthony Elanga.

With their continental dreams extinguished, the focus at St. James’ Park has pivoted entirely to domestic stability. Sunday’s clash against the Wearsiders represents more than just three points; it is an opportunity for Howe’s side to provide an immediate response to their Catalan disappointment.
