Canaries skipper Kenny McLean expressed what he thought about the American striker’s big-money move to Toronto FC
Norwich City captain Kenny McLean has spoken candidly about Josh Sargent’s long-running move to MLS side Toronto FC, admitting the saga caused frustration among supporters and within the dressing room.
Sargent recently completed a move worth up to $27 million including add-ons (£20m), bringing an end to months of speculation that unsettled the Championship club.
The United States international had pushed for the move since January and even refused to feature in an FA Cup tie against Walsall earlier this year amid the uncertainty.
McLean acknowledged the strength of feeling surrounding the departure of a player many regarded as the club’s standout performer.
“I get the fans’ frustration completely – a couple of months ago we were talking about having the best player in the Championship,” McLean told BBC Radio Norfolk.
“Then we lost him and it’s not nice for anybody. I’ve got so much love for Josh’s family, so I’m not going to say anything bad towards him.

“I’m sure the fans would enjoy it if I did but it’s a situation that’s played out the way nobody wanted it to.”
Sargent, 26, scored 56 goals in 157 appearances for Norwich after joining from Werder Bremen in 2021 and was widely seen as central to the Canaries’ promotion hopes. His desire to move to MLS, however, created an uncomfortable backdrop during the second half of the season.
Scotland international McLean revealed the constant speculation had become a regular topic internally.
“There had been constant questions” about the situation around the club and in the dressing room in recent weeks, he said.
“I’ve had my say to the lads, to Josh, to the club but that will stay in house. It’s been difficult, of course, but it’s resolved now so we can move on.”
From Toronto FC‘s side, Sargent represents a marquee acquisition as they look to rebuild ahead of the new MLS campaign. And with the player finally getting his wish, it is now on him to prove USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino that he is worthy of a World Cup spot.
