Derby Country striker Patrick Agyemang sees his World Cup dream end as an Achilles injury devastates USMNT man

United States forward Patrick Agyemang will miss this summer’s World Cup after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon during Derby County’s Championship victory over Stoke City.

The 25-year-old striker’s hopes of representing his country on the world’s biggest stage were extinguished on Monday afternoon at Pride Park.

Agyemang, who has been instrumental in Derby’s push for the Premier League, collapsed following an awkward landing in the first half of the Rams’ 2-0 win.

On Tuesday morning, Derby County released a formal statement confirming the severity of the injury.

“Patrick will be undergoing a further assessment of the injury later today,” the club announced.

“The club will provide Patrick with the highest level of medical care and rehabilitation throughout his recovery. Everyone at Derby County is fully behind Patrick at this difficult time and will continue to support him every step of the way.

“As a result of this injury, Patrick will unfortunately miss this summer’s FIFA World Cup. At this stage it would be wrong to put a timeline on his recovery. Further updates will be communicated in due course.”

The timing of the injury is particularly cruel given Agyemang’s rapid ascent within the national team setup. Having only received his first call-up in January 2025 for a training camp under Mauricio Pochettino, the former Charlotte FC striker made an immediate impact by scoring on his international debut against Venezuela.

During the March international break, he found the back of the net during a 5-2 defeat to Belgium and despite a subsequent 2-0 loss to Portugal, his performances were viewed as a rare bright spot for the USMNT as they prepared to host the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico.

A massive void for club and country

Agyemang’s absence leaves a substantial tactical hole for Derby County coach Paul Warne, who has relied on the striker’s team-leading 10 goals to propel the club into the play-off places.

Since his arrival from MLS last summer, the forward has adapted seamlessly to the physical demands of the English second tier, becoming the focal point of the Rams’ attack.

His ability to hold up play and stretch defences was a primary reason for Derby’s recent surge up the table. With the club currently sitting eighth and just three points off the top six, the loss of one of their most potent goal threats could not have come at a worse moment in the promotion race.

Pochettino now faces a significant selection dilemma just two months before the tournament’s curtain-raiser. Agyemang had arguably moved ahead of several veteran options in the striking pecking order due to his unique physical attributes and recent goalscoring form.

Patrick Agyemang stats

Prior to his injury, Patrick Agyemang had been enjoying a fruitful 2025/26 season for club and country.

He had just hit double figures for Derby County in the Championship – an impressive feat for his debut season in England after switching from MLS. He also scored in his first appearance of 2026 for the USMNT in a 2-5 defeat to Belgium.

How much did Derby pay for Patrick Agyemang?

Patrick Agyemang made his switch from Major League Soccer in the United States to the EFL Championship in England in the summer of 2025.

Derby parted ways with €6.9 million to secure Agyemang’s services from Charlotte FC, in what is looking like a smart piece of business for a player of his profile and age.

While the injury comes as a major setback for the player, his club, and his country, the objective now solely turns to a full recovery, which is estimated towards the end of 2026.
