Preview, form, team news and live broadcast details for Tuesday’s clash at the Bernabéu

Real Madrid host Monaco on Tuesday, January 20, in Matchday 7 of the Champions League league phase at the Santiago Bernabéu. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm GMT / 3:00 pm ET / 12:00 pm PT in what is a crucial fixture for both sides’ European ambitions.

Real Madrid sit above Monaco in the group standings and need a strong result to bolster their chances of automatic qualification for the knockout rounds, while the visitors are still in contention for a top-eight spot.

How the teams go into the game: form

Real Madrid’s recent run of form has been mixed. They recovered well with a 2-0 LaLiga win over Levante at the weekend, stabilising morale after a turbulent spell that included defeat to Albacete in the Copa del Rey and a loss to Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final. Their form in Europe itself shows promise mixed with inconsistency, as they have registered four Champions League victories and two losses this season.

Monaco’s domestic form tells a different story. The Ligue 1 side have struggled in France, losing seven of their past eight league matches, including a 3-1 home defeat to Lorient, though they have remained resilient in continental competition.  In the Champions League, Monaco have grabbed two victories and three draws in six games so far.

Real Madrid vs Monaco: Head-to-head

This clash marks just the third competitive meeting between Real Madrid and Monaco, a relatively rare fixture in European football.

In their previous encounters, both in the 2003/04 Champions League quarter-finals, Real Madrid and Monaco shared one win apiece, leading to Monaco’s famous progression on away goals after a 5-5 aggregate thriller.

That history adds an extra layer of intrigue to this meeting, with Monaco eager to repeat past success on Spanish soil and Madrid determined to assert dominance at the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid vs Monaco: Team news

Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa takes charge of his third match in a third different competition. He will be without Álvaro Carreras due to suspension, while Éder Militão and Trent Alexander-Arnold remain injured.

Several others, including Rodrygo, Ferland Mendy, Antonio Rüdiger and Andriy Lunin, are fitness doubts, although Kylian Mbappé is available after recovering from a knee issue.

Monaco are monitoring the fitness of Folarin Balogun, who is a major doubt after missing their last match. Paul Pogba is unlikely to feature, and Lukas Hrádecký, Christian Mawissa, Takumi Minamino and Mohammed Salisu are all sidelined through injury.
