Chelsea captain Reece James injury update ahead of crucial FA Cup and Premier League run-in

Chelsea captain Reece James is targeting a return to competitive action as soon as possible, but Blues fans may be forced to wait longer than expected as he continues his rehabilitation from a significant hamstring injury.

The 26-year-old defender has been a spectator since sustaining the injury during a disappointing defeat to Newcastle last month.

His absence immediately sparked concerns regarding his availability for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad ahead of the World Cup in North America this summer. However, recent medical updates have provided a more optimistic outlook for the Blues skipper.

According to The Guardian, James is making good progress in his recovery, suggesting he could feature in the final weeks of the Premier League campaign, in late April or early May.

Having recently committed his long-term future to Stamford Bridge with a contract extending to 2032, the captain remains a central figure in the club’s plans, though his recurring fitness issues continue to be a source of frustration for both player and management.

Despite the positive trajectory of his recovery, James is set to miss a defining run of fixtures for the West London club.

He is expected to be unavailable for the upcoming Premier League encounter against Manchester City, as well as matches against Manchester United and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Chelsea secured their place in the final four with a resounding 7-0 FA Cup victory over Port Vale, a performance that provided much-needed respite following a bruising run of four consecutive defeats prior to the international break.

Liam Rosenior on Reece James injury ahead of City clash

Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior, who was appointed in January following a successful stint at Strasbourg, has been cautious about setting a definitive date for his captain’s return.

Speaking ahead of the visit of Manchester City on Sunday, Rosenior emphasised a “day-to-day” approach to player fitness.

“I don’t know. We work day-to-day, so I don’t want to give a timeline and not come through with that timeline, put pressure on those players, but they’re all working really, really well at this moment,” he said.

It should be noted that Reece James has missed eight games through injury in a season where he has made 36 appearances in which he has recorded two goals and seven assists across all competitions.

“When you see Reece from afar, you admire him. He can play many different positions technically, he can score goals, defend, his athleticism,” Rosenior said in March.

“The thing that impresses me most is his humility. You realise why he’s having, and will have, the career he’s had as captain of Chelsea. He will be our leader for as long as I’m here.

“It has been a really good two and a half months with him.”
