On top of a second consecutive home defeat for Sunderland, Régis Le Bris were dealt a number of injury concerns, including key defender Nordi Mukiele
Sunderland have been dealt a worrying defensive setback after Nordi Mukiele was forced off during Saturday’s 1-3 home Premier League defeat to Fulham.
The former Paris Saint-Germain defender, who joined the Black Cats in the summer, has quickly established himself as a key figure at the heart of Régis Le Bris’ backline.
His physicality and experience have been central to Sunderland’s defensive structure this season, making his early exit against Fulham all the more concerning.
After a goalless first half, Raúl Jiménez struck twice for the visitors in quick succession at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland responded with an Enzo Le Fée penalty to reduce the deficit and briefly threatened to build momentum, but a late third goal from the visitors through Alex Iwobi sealed the hosts’ second straight home defeat.
Mukiele’s injury compounded the frustration. The defender went down during the second half and was unable to continue, leaving Le Bris with further problems in an already testing fixture.
After the match, the Sunderland head coach admitted the full extent of the damage is not yet clear.
“It’s a bit early to say, so we had Nordi, Jocelin [Ta Bi], Brian [Brobbey], maybe Romaine [Mundle] as well, so it was a tough day,” Le Bris said.
The suggestion that multiple players could be facing spells on the sidelines only added to the sense of concern around the Stadium of Light.
Mukiele later took to Instagram to address supporters directly, striking a defiant tone despite the uncertainty surrounding his condition.
“Doesn’t matter how long it will takes [sic].. I promise you one thing: I WILL BE BACK STRONGER,” he wrote.
The post quickly drew messages of support from across the football world. Former PSG teammate Kylian Mbappé was among those to respond, while Liverpool’s Jeremie Frimpong – who previously played alongside Mukiele at Bayer Leverkusen – also offered encouragement.
Sunderland will now await further medical assessments to determine the severity of the injury. With Mukiele a cornerstone of their defence since his arrival, any prolonged absence would represent a significant blow as the Black Cats look to bounce back from defeat and maintain momentum in the weeks ahead.
