Régis Le Bris weighs the risk of rushing back key starters like Nordi Mukiele for Sunday’s clash at St. James’ Park following a costly home defeat to Brighton
Sunderland’s preparations for Sunday’s highly anticipated Tyne-Wear derby with Newcastle United have been thrown into disarray following a 1-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, adding to the Nordi Mukiele injury that has kept him out of the side in recent weeks.
While the defeat at the Stadium of Light was a blow to the team’s momentum, the true cost may be felt in the treatment room.
Head coach Régis Le Bris is now dealing with a “troublingly long” injury list that has left several key players as major doubts for the trip to face Newcastle.
One of the most pressing concerns involves centre-back Dan Ballard, who was forced off during the second half against Brighton with hamstring discomfort.
His potential absence would leave a significant void in a defence already stretched thin. Le Bris also confirmed that forward Wilson Isidor was unavailable to come off the bench due to a minor knock, while Brian Brobbey’s minutes had to be strictly managed to avoid further aggravation.
“We were really on the edge,” Le Bris said regarding his squad rotation. “We try our best to keep the team safe… but we are just on the edge.”

Le Bris highlighted the precarious balance between the emotional weight of a derby and the long-term health of his roster.
The status of Nordi Mukiele remains the most contentious decision facing the coaching staff. While the defender is expected to resume training this week, Le Bris cautioned that a premature return could lead to an eight-week layoff.
“It’s always the same: you can take the risk, he might play against Newcastle, but if we lose him for eight weeks after, it doesn’t make sense,” the Sunderland coach added.
The injury crisis extends to the goalkeeper position, where Robin Roefs has been sidelined with a hamstring issue. This has forced January signing Melker Ellborg to continue his baptism of fire in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old Swede, who recently kept a clean sheet on his debut against Leeds, could start at St. James’ Park if Roefs fails to recover.
On a more positive note, midfielder Enzo Le Fée is expected to be fit for Sunday, and Reinildo is scheduled to return to full training this week, providing some much-needed reinforcement for a Sunderland side looking to bounce back from their recent FA Cup exit at Port Vale.
