Supercopa de España: Real Madrid handed major boost as Kylian Mbappé returns

Real Madrid have received a welcome dose of optimism ahead of the 2026 Supercopa de España final against Barcelona after confirmation that Kylian Mbappé is set to rejoin the squad.

The French superstar had been sidelined with a knee sprain that raised doubts about his availability for the mid-season clash, but head coach Xabi Alonso’s latest update suggests that Mbappé’s presence could be decisive in Sunday’s El Clásico showdown in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Mbappé, who has lit up LaLiga this season with 18 goals, missed Madrid’s semi-final victory over Atlético Madrid as he continued to recover from the knee issue. With Los Blancos securing a 2-1 win to reach the final, the mood in the camp has shifted dramatically now that the 27-year-old forward is back in contention. His ability to unlock defences and score in big moments provides Madrid with a tactical edge against Barcelona’s high backline.

Why Mbappé’s return is so important

Mbappé’s return not only improves Real Madrid’s chances on paper, but it also lifts the psychological burden on his teammates. The forward has been central to Los Blancos’ attack this season, combining pace, movement and a clinical edge that few defenders can match.

His return provides Alonso with a key weapon against Hansi Flick’s bold defensive line – one that can stretch Barcelona’s defence and create chances both in wide areas and through the centre.

Real Madrid produced a strong performance against Atlético despite his absence – Federico Valverde’s early free-kick and Rodrygo’s second-half strike were enough to secure progression. But facing Barcelona in a Supercopa final is a different challenge altogether, and the added firepower of Mbappé could be the difference maker.

Alonso confirmed that Mbappé had travelled with the squad to Saudi Arabia and looks “a lot better,” though he stopped short of guaranteeing his full involvement from kick-off.

Madrid looking for season turning point

Madrid are intent on securing silverware early in 2026. The first half of the season goes down as a disappointment for Xabi Alonso, having been top of LaLiga after their October Clásico victory, only to end up four points behind their rivals at the midway point of the campaign.

As plenty of question marks hover over the Basque coach already, winning the Supercopa is an opportunity to start the season with a boost that could switch the mentality going into the decisive phase of the season at home and in Europe.

While the form guide suggests the Catalans are favourites, Madrid’s chances have only improved with Mbappé’s return.
