Michael O’Neill provides the latest Todd Cantwell injury update as Blackburn prepare for a crucial Championship clash with Portsmouth in the relegation battle
Blackburn Rovers manager Michael O’Neill has delivered the latest update on Todd Cantwell as the midfielder continues to recover from injury ahead of a crucial period in the Championship season.
Cantwell has been sidelined since February after picking up a foot problem, leaving Blackburn without one of their most creative players during a tense stage of the campaign. The midfielder’s absence has come at a difficult time, with the club embroiled in a tight relegation battle.
Rovers currently sit 20th in the table and are preparing for a pivotal fixture against Portsmouth at Ewood Park. The clash could have major implications near the bottom of the standings, with Portsmouth just one point above Blackburn in 19th.
Meanwhile, Leicester currently occupy the final relegation spot in 22nd place, four points behind Rovers, adding even more significance to Blackburn’s upcoming matches.
Cantwell has not featured since playing the full 90 minutes in a 2–0 defeat to his former club Norwich City. Prior to his injury setback, the 28-year-old had been a regular presence in O’Neill’s side.

Across the current campaign, Cantwell has made 20 Championship appearances, scoring four goals and registering three assists. His attacking influence has made him a key part of Blackburn’s system, and the club will be hoping he can return to action soon.
O’Neill shares encouraging Cantwell recovery update
Speaking about the midfielder’s condition, O’Neill confirmed Cantwell remains under close supervision from the club’s medical staff.
“Todd is still with the medical team and it’s a day-by-day thing,” the Blackburn boss explained in his pre-match press conference ahead of Portsmouth’s visit.
“We’ll wait and see how he comes through over the next 48 to 72 hours, which might give him an option to be involved next week.”
Away from the pitch, Cantwell’s long-term future at the club has also been the subject of discussion. A report from Football Insider in February suggested contract negotiations had slowed as Blackburn focus on securing their Championship status.
Cantwell’s current deal runs until 2027, but the club are understood to be keen tying one of their key players down as soon as possible rather than risk uncertainty during the summer transfer window.
