Tottenham have been handed a timely defensive boost ahead of Saturday’s early kick-off against Manchester United, with Thomas Frank confirming that Micky van de Ven is back in contention.

Spurs welcome United after an encouraging 2-2 draw with Manchester City last weekend, and Frank’s update on his defensive options will come as a major positive ahead of another high-profile test.

“Micky trained today and is available for selection for Saturday,” Frank confirmed on Thursday, with the Dutchman having missed recent action through injury.

His return strengthens Tottenham’s options at the back as they prepare to face a United side still managing several fitness issues of their own.

There was also positive news regarding Cristian Romero, who is available for selection despite recent off-field attention.

The Argentine defender attracted headlines this week following an Instagram post in which he described Tottenham’s injury situation as “disgraceful”, prompting questions around squad depth and January recruitment.

Frank played down any wider issue, instead highlighting Romero’s personality and competitiveness.

“I think if you want to know what he meant you have to ask him,” Frank said. “Cuti is a very passionate person and leaves everything on the pitch. He wants to win every time and there can be an outburst. It is something we have dealt with and dealt with internally.”

The Tottenham head coach added that while he would not have chosen to express things in the same way, Romero’s intent should not be misinterpreted.

“The beauty of written text is that you can read into it. The only person who knows what it meant was Cuti. It shows that he is extremely passionate and wants to achieve great things with his team-mates.”

Elsewhere, Djed Spence is edging closer to a return and could yet be involved. “Djed is getting closer and is touch and go,” Frank revealed. “There is a chance he could be available.”
