The Catalan giants move to secure the teenage star while finalising a contract renewal for Andreas Christensen in attempt to beef up defence
Barcelona’s defensive strategy for the 2026 summer transfer window has begun to crystallise as the club reportedly pursues a dual approach of youth acquisition and veteran stability. Hansi Flick has prioritised Tottenham Hotspur’s 19-year-old loanee Luka Vušković to lead a new generation of Blaugrana defenders.
Simultaneously, the club’s hierarchy is working to finalise a significant contract extension for Andreas Christensen, ensuring the squad retains its tactical balance as the club prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.
Vušković emerges as Flick’s top target following Bundesliga breakthrough
The search for a modern, ball-playing centre-back has led Barcelona to Hamburger SV, where Croatian international Luka Vušković is currently enjoying a dominant loan spell from Tottenham.
According to Sky Germany, Hansi Flick has been a “silent admirer” of the teenager, who has anchored Hamburg’s defence while displaying an unusual scoring touch for a defender.
Since joining HSV on loan from Tottenham in August 2025, Vušković has recorded 23 appearances and contributed four goals, establishing himself as a pillar of the Bundesliga side’s backline.
Meanwhile, former Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitić vouched for his compatriot when asked about the player’s mentality and foundations.

“This is no coincidence,” Rakitić told Sky Sport Germany. “The boy and his family are doing so many things right. They work incredibly hard. He has everything it takes to become one of the best centre-backs. If he keeps pushing himself, Croatia could have a top defender for the next ten or fifteen years.”
While Hamburg is desperate to retain the Croatia U21 star, the club’s sporting director, Claus Costa, admitted that a permanent stay is “contractually impossible.”
Tottenham, who signed Vušković for £12 million in 2023, are reportedly bracing for a massive bid from Barcelona as the Catalans look to beat rivals such as Bayern Munich to his signature.
Christensen contract talks accelerate amid reduced salary proposal
While the pursuit of Vušković represents a long-term investment, Barcelona are moving with equal urgency to settle the future of 29-year-old Andreas Christensen.
With his current agreement set to expire on June 30, 2026, sporting director Deco met with the player’s representatives this week to present an official renewal proposal. The offer on the table is a two-year extension that would keep the Danish international at the Camp Nou until June 2028.
The negotiations reflect Barcelona’s broader strategy of stabilising their wage bill while maintaining a competitive roster. Despite struggling with injury setbacks over the last two seasons, Christensen remains a trusted asset for Flick due to his versatility and composure on the ball.
If Christensen accepts the pay cut, it would provide Barcelona with the financial flexibility needed to aggressively pursue Vušković without violating the league’s strict salary cap.
