The Nerazzurri are interested in the Aston Villa no.1 amid potential renewed interest from Manchester United

Inter Milan have started planning for their next long-term goalkeeper, and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez is among the experienced names now under consideration as the club looks to secure a replacement for Yann Sommer.

While attention remains on the current transfer window, Inter have reportedly already made contact with the Argentine’s representatives to assess whether a future move could be realistic.

The Nerazzurri are preparing for a post-Sommer scenario and have opened dialogue with the entourage of the World Cup winning goalkeeper to understand the potential framework of an operation.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio’s website, at this stage the talks are exploratory, focused on feasibility rather than negotiations, but Martínez’s inclusion on Inter’s shortlist reflects serious internal discussion.

Should he opt for a move to Inter, the Aston Villa shot-stopper could join forces with Argentina teammate Lautaro Martínez, who could help him settle in quicker to life in the north of Italy.

The club is weighing whether to pursue an experienced, ready-made solution rather than investing immediately in a younger profile.

Yet, Martínez earns a substantial salary at Aston Villa, and Inter would only be able to proceed if the goalkeeper were willing to reduce his wages.

That remains one of the biggest variables, and for now Martínez is viewed as an option rather than a priority. The situation is expected to be revisited in the coming weeks as Inter refine their summer strategy.

Earlier in the season, the 32-year-old was left out of Villa’s matchday squad for a home defeat against Crystal Palace, a decision that raised questions externally. Following that match, Villa manager Unai Emery addressed the situation publicly.

“It’s one thing we have to fix. Tomorrow the window is finishing and we are expecting something to improve our squad. Keep calm,” Emery told Sky Sports.

“One of the circumstances is Emi Martinez, we will see tomorrow and then we try get the balance and work after the break.”

Manchester United interest in Emi Martínez keeps options open

Despite the uncertainty, Martínez ultimately remained at Villa Park after Manchester United chose a different route in the transfer market.

United completed the signing of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day in a deal worth €25 million, shelving their immediate pursuit of Martínez.

However, that may not be the end of the story. United are expected to reassess their goalkeeping options, and Martínez continues to be viewed internally as a high-level solution. Former United chief scout Mick Brown suggested the club’s interest never truly disappeared.

“I’m still surprised they didn’t get Martinez,” Brown told Football Insider.

“They wanted him, he wanted the move, but at the end of the day they couldn’t come to an agreement with Villa so the deal collapsed. They’ve gone and got Lammens now, but Amorim has been saying he still wants a goalkeeper, so the recruitment team will be looking at their options.

“I have no doubt Martinez is still one of those, because he’s a top-class goalkeeper and one who would immediately solve the issues they’ve had recently.

He’s strong, imposing, a top shot stopper and a character in the dressing room which it feels like they’re sorely lacking at Man United at the moment. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them go back in for him, especially with the manager still demanding a goalkeeper, whether that’s in January or next summer.”
