Marcus Rashford has impressed for FC Barcelona but faces competition

Although Marcus Rashford has impressed on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United, the Catalans are weighing up a cheaper alternative

FC Barcelona face a significant decision over their left-wing options ahead of next season, with Marcus Rashford and rising talent Jan Virgili presenting two very different paths.

Rashford has enjoyed a productive loan spell in Catalonia, contributing double figures in both goals and assists under Hansi Flick.

Despite not being a guaranteed starter due to Raphinha occupying the left flank, the England international has proven his value through versatility and experience, also featuring centrally when required.

Various injuries for the Brazilian have allowed Rashford more game time than he might have been expecting when he first joined, and he has proven a reliable understudy with his output of 23 goals and assists.

His impact extends beyond the pitch. Rashford has reportedly integrated well into the dressing room, earning respect for both his professionalism and willingness to accept a rotational role.

However, Barcelona’s financial constraints complicate matters, with a €30 million purchase clause representing a considerable outlay.

Jan Virgili: Barcelona’s homegrown alternative

Virgili represents a very different profile. The 19-year-old, who came through Barcelona’s academy before joining Real Mallorca, has gained valuable top-flight experience this season.

Barcelona retained a degree of control over his future. Included in the €3.5m sale to Real Mallorca last summer was 50% of any future sale and a buyback clause. Initially not seen as a realistic option while Rashford impressed, Virgili’s consistent performances in LaLiga have forced a rethink.

Jan Virgili style of play

Virgili is a dynamic, right-footed winger who operates primarily from the left, cutting inside with pace and technical ability. His low centre of gravity and direct dribbling make him a constant threat in one-on-one situations.

He has also demonstrated tactical flexibility, featuring across the front line – including on the right and in more central roles.

Notably, he caused massive problems for Jules Koundé during the recent meeting between Barcelona and Mallorca at Camp Nou, underlining his readiness for a bigger stage.

Jan Virgili stats vs Marcus Rashford stats

Virgili has been a regular for Mallorca in a challenging campaign, making 22 appearances (17 starts) and registering six assists, though he is still awaiting his first goal.

Rashford, by contrast, has delivered proven output across all competitions, featuring in 39 matches with 10 goals and 13 assists – including five goals in the Champions League.

How will Barcelona decide?

Barcelona’s decision ultimately comes down to strategy. Signing Rashford would provide a ready-made, high-level option capable of influencing decisive moments, albeit at a significant financial cost.

Alternatively, Virgili offers a long-term, low-cost solution aligned with the club’s tradition of developing young talent. With potential moves for a marquee striker – such as Erling Haaland or Julián Álvarez – also under consideration, saving €30 million could prove decisive.

The final weeks of the season may shape the outcome. If Rashford delivers in crucial moments in the latter stages of LaLiga and the Champions League, Barcelona may lean towards experience. If not, with the economic troubles in mind, the club could turn to youth and future potential with Virgili.
