The club’s sporting director dismissed a potential return outright, before fresh claims emerged linking Ramos to Marseille following a breakdown in talks

Sergio Ramos will not be returning to Sevilla, despite recent speculation that he was ready to help the club through a difficult sporting moment and instead is allegedly on the brink of a short-term deal with Marseille in Ligue 1.

Any hope of a reunion was shut down decisively this week, first publicly by the club and later through reports that revealed deeper tensions behind the scenes.

In recent weeks, the idea of Ramos coming back to Sevilla gathered momentum, not in a future ownership role but as an active player willing to contribute on the pitch.

The proposal carried emotional weight, given Ramos’ roots at the club and its current struggles. However, that possibility was publicly dismissed by Sevilla’s sporting director, Antonio Cordón, who made clear that the move was never viable.

Speaking to the media, Cordón denied any discussions and framed the situation as financially impossible.

“I haven’t heard anything, but even if I had, it wasn’t possible because there was no limit. So I’m not thinking about it. It was like going to buy a car without any money,” he said.

Those remarks appeared to close the door completely, but they also sparked a strong reaction from Ramos’ camp.

Later the same day, journalist Roberto Gómez provided further detail on the situation while appearing on the programme El Desmarque, offering a version of events that went beyond budgetary constraints.

According to Gómez, Ramos was deeply angered after hearing Cordón’s comments. The defender’s brother reportedly sought an urgent meeting with José María del Nido, the president of Sevilla, to address what they felt was a misrepresentation of Ramos’ intentions.

A free return rejected over control fears

Gómez claimed that Ramos’ representatives arrived with what they believed was an unanswerable proposal.

“’We don’t agree, we have the guarantee here, he’s playing for free until the end of the season, he wants to be a player, captain and, on top of that, president’,” was the proposal according to Gómez.

The idea, according to that account, was that Ramos would help Sevilla on the pitch at no cost, while also positioning himself as a future figure of authority within the club. It was precisely that long-term ambition that reportedly alarmed Sevilla’s leadership.

“The president of Sevilla told him, word for word: ‘I can’t allow you to come and play because, in three months, you’re going to be the owner of Sevilla and you’re going to kick me out of here,’” Gómez added.

Gómez reported that Ramos was left extremely upset by the conversation and felt the decision was rooted in internal politics rather than the club’s immediate needs.

In response, the former Real Madrid captain looked elsewhere as he desperately searches a way back into European football, and Gómez alleges that he is said to be close to signing a short-term contract with Marseille.

“Ramos gets very displeased and is about to sign a sub-contract with French team Olympique Marseille.”

There has, so far, been no confirmed negotiations between Sergio Ramos and Marseille. The Spaniard has previously played in Ligue 1 with Marseille rivals Paris Saint-Germain between 2021 and 2023.

The 39-year-old is a free agent and is aiming to get first-team football under his belt, as he holds an outside ambition of making the Spain squad for the World Cup.
