Florian Wirtz edges closer to a return as Arne Slot reveals the Liverpool midfielder could feature against Wolverhampton Wanderers
Arne Slot has delivered a positive update on the fitness of Florian Wirtz after the midfielder missed the last three matches for Liverpool through injury.
The Germany international has been sidelined with a back issue that ruled him out of Liverpool’s recent fixtures, including their clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this week. However, the playmaker has now taken an encouraging step in his recovery.
Speaking ahead of Friday night’s meeting with Wolves in the FA Cup, Slot revealed that Wirtz returned to partial training with the squad on Wednesday.
The Liverpool head coach explained that the 22-year-old was involved in certain elements of the session as he continues his rehabilitation process.
According to Arne Slot, Wirtz took part as a “joker” player during training – a role often used to allow someone returning from injury to participate without the full physical demands placed on the rest of the squad.

That progress means the attacking midfielder could potentially make the bench for the upcoming cup tie, although the club will assess his condition again before making a final decision.
Slot suggested that, in an ideal scenario, Wirtz may be able to feature briefly if his recovery continues to move in the right direction.
Liverpool will be eager for positive news after suffering a frustrating defeat earlier in the week. The Reds were beaten 2–1 by Wolves at Molineux, with the decisive goal arriving in injury time against the side currently sitting bottom of the table.
Friday’s FA Cup meeting now offers a quick opportunity for Liverpool to respond and progress in the competition.
Slot was also asked whether any of his players had picked up new injury concerns during Tuesday’s Premier League clash. The Dutchman indicated that, so far, the squad appears to have come through the match without additional setbacks.
Liverpool’s medical staff will continue monitoring Wirtz closely over the next 24 hours before deciding if he can play any part against Wolves.
