Chelsea suspend Enzo Fernández for two matches following recent remarks amid Real Madrid and PSG transfer links
Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has decided to drop Enzo Fernández from the Blues’ squad for the next two fixtures after the midfielder publicly questioned his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
The disciplinary crisis at West London reached a breaking point on Friday afternoon as Rosenior confirmed that the club’s record signing would play no part in the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale or the subsequent Premier League clash with Manchester City.
The internal sanction follows a week of mounting tension after Chelsea’s humiliating 8-2 aggregate exit from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
In the wake of that defeat, Fernández sparked fury among the Blues’ hierarchy and fan base by failing to commit to the club beyond the current campaign.
When pressed by ESPN Argentina on whether he would remain in London for the 2026/27 season, the 25-year-old gave a non-committal response: “I don’t know. There are eight games left and the FA Cup. There’s the World Cup, and then we’ll see.”
The fallout from those comments was further exacerbated by a recent appearance on LuzuTV, where Fernández expressed a distinct preference for the Spanish capital amid intensifying links with Real Madrid.
“I always tell my wife that if I have to choose a city to live in Europe, I really like Madrid. It’s very similar to Buenos Aires,” he remarked, a sentiment that Rosenior interpreted as a bridge too far.

Speaking to the media ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup tie, the Chelsea coach Rosenior was firm in his stance.
“I spoke with Enzo an hour ago. We’ve made a decision – he won’t be available for tomorrow’s game and he won’t be available for Manchester City,” Rosenior stated.
“It’s disappointing to speak in that way. What I will say about Enzo is that, in terms of him as a person, I’ve got no bad words to say. But a line was crossed in terms of our culture. We had to make a sanction.”
A season on the brink
The suspension comes at the worst possible moment for a Chelsea side currently sitting sixth in the Premier League and battling to save their season.
Rosenior, who was appointed in January on a six-and-a-half-year contract, has overseen a volatile period that recently saw the club suffer four consecutive defeats across all competitions.
The absence of Fernández, who has provided eight goals and three assists in 30 league appearances this term, leaves a significant void in a midfield already under immense pressure.
Despite the internal strife, the board has reportedly maintained their backing for Rosenior, viewing the disciplinary action as a necessary step to restore authority within a dressing room that has appeared increasingly unsettled.
The prospect of losing Enzo Fernández permanently this summer is a reality the Chelsea board must now seriously consider. Although the Argentine is under contract until 2032, reports from Spain suggest that Real Madrid are preparing a bid in the region of €100 million (£87m) to bring the midfielder to the Bernabéu.
