Liam Rosenior delivers Chelsea fitness update before Arsenal clash as Reece James returns but key absentees remain
Chelsea head into Sunday’s high-profile London derby against Arsenal in the Premier League with a mixed injury update after Liam Rosenior confirmed Reece James is fit.
The Blues travel to the Emirates Stadium aiming to respond to their recent home draw with Burnley, knowing the challenge against the Premier League leaders will require their strongest available XI.
Rosenior began his pre-match press conference with positive news regarding his captain.
“Reece is absolutely fine,” he confirmed, handing Chelsea a significant boost ahead of facing Arsenal’s attacking threat.
James’ availability provides leadership and balance on the right flank, particularly important in a fixture that could hinge on fine defensive margins.
However, there are setbacks elsewhere. Marc Cucurella will miss out this weekend despite making encouraging progress in his recovery.
“Cucu is progressing really well but he won’t be available for Sunday. Hopefully, we get him back in as soon as possible,” Rosenior explained.

Estevao Willian also remains sidelined.
“Estevao, unfortunately, will be out for a little bit longer,” the head coach added, suggesting the Brazilian teenager’s return is not imminent.
Midfield and defensive updates
There was better news in midfield, with Romeo Lavia continuing his steady comeback.
“Romeo Lavia is getting stronger and stronger. We had a mini-practice match in the week, where he looked really good, which is great for him,” Rosenior said.
Jamie Gittens is also progressing positively in his rehabilitation, while Dario Essugo has returned to training, increasing competition in the centre of the park.
In defence, Levi Colwill continues to make strides in his long-term recovery programme.
“Levi is doing really well with his long-term rehab… Hopefully, we can get all these players fit and on the pitch before the end of the season,” Rosenior added.
With James available but several others still working their way back, Chelsea’s squad depth will be tested against Arsenal. Rosenior, though, struck a confident tone as the Blues prepare for one of their biggest fixtures of the campaign.
