Rovers aim for definitive safety in final away day at Bramall Lane as Michael O’Neill’s squad travel to Yorkshire

Michael O’Neill has provided a positive update concerning Todd Cantwell’s fitness ahead of Blackburn Rovers’ crucial clash against Sheffield United.

Blackburn travel to Yorkshire knowing that a positive result could finally extinguish any lingering fears of a return to the third tier.

The Lancashire outfit approaches their final road trip of the 2025/26 campaign with their fate firmly in their own hands.

While recent performances have shown a positive trend in defensive organisation, the club’s position just above the relegation zone remains a primary worry for the hierarchy.

A victory at Bramall Lane would mathematically secure Rovers’ place in the Championship for another year, regardless of results elsewhere.

The visitors arrive in Sheffield looking to build upon the momentum of a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Coventry City last Friday.

Despite the frustration of conceding late, the point moved Rovers onto 49 points, five clear of the bottom three.

Late-season boost for O’Neill

The 56-year-old coach’s options have been significantly bolstered this week, with several players returning to the grass at the Senior Training Centre.

While fresh injury concerns are non-existent, the coaching staff are currently managing the reintegration of Scott Wharton and Todd Cantwell, both of whom have participated in full sessions.

There is also an encouraging update regarding Hayden Carter, who has returned to training after a lengthy layoff. However, O’Neill noted that while seeing “more bodies” in the squad is a major positive, he will not risk the long-term fitness of his players by handing them immediate starts.

The ability to rotate the bench is seen as a vital advantage for the trip across the Pennines, especially given the heavy reliance on academy prospects in recent months.

O’Neill admitted that he has often looked “enviously” at the depth available to opposition managers during his tenure, making the sudden influx of senior experience a welcome change.

“I think we’re probably better than we’ve been in recent weeks,” O’Neill told RoversTV.

“Todd trained today, Hayden Carter trained today. Scott Wharton trained, Adam Forshaw trained.

“They’re all positives for us. We’ll have to see how they react to that and not all those players are in contention to start the game.

“We’ll have to manage their minutes a little bit, but just seeing the squad train with more bodies and with a bit of bulk to it, it was nice to see.

“That’s a positive, because we’ve been having to add players from the Academy too often. It’s been pretty much every session to make the numbers up. Today was the first day that we’ve had a number of senior players all training.”
