Arne Slot provides the latest on his goalkeeping crisis with updates on Alisson and Mamardashvili in press conference ahead of Liverpool vs Crystal Palace

Arne Slot has admitted that Liverpool face a delicate decision over Alisson Becker’s involvement this weekend, with the Brazilian goalkeeper currently fighting to prove his fitness ahead of Saturday’s visit from Crystal Palace.

The Reds enter the final stretch of the season with an atmosphere of encouraging momentum following their Merseyside derby triumph.

While the collective focus remains on securing a top-five finish, the sudden depletion of the club’s goalkeeping options has become a primary hurdle.

The Dutch coach has confirmed that backup goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is unavailable. Meanwhile, Alisson has been sidelined for the last six matches due to a persistent hamstring issue and is yet to return to full training with the senior group.

Slot adopted a cautious approach during his pre-match briefing on Friday, suggesting that while the 33-year-old is nearing a return, a late call will be required to determine if he can safely reclaim his place between the posts.

“Giorgi will definitely not be available for tomorrow and also not for the upcoming weeks. Ali is close to a return to play, so let’s see if tomorrow comes too early, yes or no,” Slot said.

The urgency of the situation is compounded by the loss of Mamardashvili, who was stretchered off during last Sunday’s win at Goodison Park after sustaining a wound in a collision. The Georgian international is expected to miss several weeks, leaving the path clear for Freddie Woodman to start if Alisson is not deemed ready.

Experienced Woodman on standby for first start since 2021

Woodman, who joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Preston North End last summer, is considered a reliable and fit option by the management team.

Despite having limited minutes since his arrival, Arne Slot highlighted the 29-year-old’s extensive pedigree as a former youth international champion as a reason for confidence.

The Liverpool coach noted that Woodman’s experience at both Premier League and Championship levels makes him an ideal deputy for such a high-pressure fixture.

“There is a reason we have signed an experienced third goalkeeper,” Slot added. “He has the experience to play… he is a very good man and very light in the dressing room.”

In more positive news for the defensive rotation, Joe Gomez has been cleared to return after missing the victory over Everton.

“He is back in the squad, so that’s really positive because last week I only had two centre-backs that were playing and no-one on the bench so it’s really helpful that Joe is back,” Slot noted.
