Michael Carrick press conference injury update ahead of Chelsea vs Man United, with latest on suspensions and defensive crisis
Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday in a huge clash in the race for Champions League qualification.
Both sides are firmly in the mix for a top-five finish, with United currently third and level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa, while Chelsea are chasing from seven points back.
Despite a recent 2-1 defeat to Leeds United, United remain in a strong position—but preparations for this weekend have been far from straightforward.
Interim manager Michael Carrick addressed the media ahead of the trip to west London, with much of the focus on a growing issue within his squad.
Defensive crisis forces Carrick into reshuffle
United are dealing with a major defensive shortage, with multiple centre-backs unavailable for the trip to Stamford Bridge.
Lisandro Martínez begins a three-match suspension following his red card against Leeds, a decision Carrick made clear he disagreed with.
“Yes, I think we’re obviously disappointed, we didn’t agree with it. I think it was pretty obvious how I felt after the game and I still feel that way – I don’t want to go into it now. I think it is what it is,” Carrick said.
“We’ve been hit with some decisions, and at the end of the day, now we’ve just got to accept it and move on, whether we like them or not.”
Further frustration followed, with Harry Maguire handed an additional ban after an incident involving a match official.
“To be honest, there’s not much we can react to,” Carrick said on the Maguire ban.

“Massively disappointed, of course. I think quite a few reasons to be disappointed in a big way over those types of situations over the last three weeks, but obviously now we’ve got to move on, the decisions have been made, it’s something that we’re really disappointed with in many ways, but that’s it now. We’ve got to move on and we will do.”
Long-term absentee Matthijs de Ligt also remains unavailable, while Lenny Yoro has since been ruled out after picking up an injury.
That leaves Ayden Heaven as the only recognised senior centre-back in the squad, with Carrick backing the youngster to step up if required.
“I think Ayden’s in a good place, well I know he’s in a good place. He’s obviously still young and he’s progressing through the early stage of his career really,” he said.
“So, I think it’s pretty natural for him to play some games and maybe not some others. He’s training really well, he’s learning, he’s listening, he wants to improve, so I think it’s pretty natural for a centre-half of his age, he’s probably well ahead of schedule in terms of the games that he’s played.
“He’s trained well, I’ve got no worries. He went away and played with England a couple of weeks ago and done well, so yes, looking forward to the game for sure.”
Carrick may now be forced to improvise, with players such as Luke Shaw, Noussair Mazraoui or Casemiro potential options to fill in at centre-back.

There are also concerns elsewhere, with Patrick Dorgu and Kobbie Mainoo both doubts heading into the match.
“Patrick’s not, no. He’s going well, he’s rehabbing well, he’s kind of on track, but he’s not with us in terms of training yet, but he’s back on the pitch, as I’ve already said, so that’s positive, and he’s doing really well,” Carrick said.
“Kobbie, [is doing] little bits. We’re working towards it, he’s done little bits, so there’s a decision to be made there.”
With so many defensive absentees, United face a significant test as they look to maintain their place in the top four.
