The Italy defender remains happy In Milan for now, but growing interest from Barcelona is beginning to place his long-term future firmly under the spotlight
Alessandro Bastoni could become one of the major names to watch during the upcoming transfer window as Barcelona intensify their interest in the Inter defender ahead of next season.
Speculation surrounding the Italy international has been gathering momentum across both Spain and Italy for months now. Reports suggest the situation may soon move beyond simple admiration, with Barcelona expected to open discussions with the player’s representatives in the coming days.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, a meeting between Barça officials and Bastoni’s entourage is scheduled this week as the Catalan club begins evaluating whether a move is financially and strategically possible.
The conversations are expected to focus on the defender’s salary expectations, Inter’s position and the overall feasibility of any potential deal given Barcelona’s ongoing economic restrictions.
The 27-year-old has become one of Europe’s highest-rated central defenders during his time at Inter, combining defensive composure with exceptional passing ability and tactical intelligence. His performances have made him a cornerstone of both Simone Inzaghi’s system and the Italian national team.
Inter president Giuseppe Marotta has now publicly confirmed Barcelona’s admiration for Bastoni, although he insisted there has not yet been any concrete development.
“He is a great talent. He was unlucky in certain episodes. Everyone had their eyes on him. He made that naïve mistake against Juventus with the simulation, he was the first to admit it, but we protected him. He is a great champion,” Marotta said during an interview with Radio Anch’Io Sport.

“I won’t deny there is interest from Barcelona, but nothing concrete yet. A player leaves if he expresses the desire to go. At this moment he is happy to be with us and we are happy with him.”
Vieri insists no player is bigger than the club
Former Inter striker Christian Vieri has also shared his view on the growing attention surrounding Bastoni, stressing that the defender must carefully evaluate his own priorities before making any decision.
“He has to decide with his heart and his head. No one can put themselves in his shoes, and whatever decision he makes will deserve everyone’s respect,” Vieri explained.
“He has been treated unfairly and he will make his own assessment. He is strategic for Inter, but no player is irreplaceable. Even Messi left Barcelona.”
Barcelona’s interest in Bastoni is understandable given the profile of defender the club currently lacks. Hansi Flick is believed to want another elite level centre back capable of operating comfortably in possession while maintaining defensive authority in high line situations.
Although Barça continue building around younger defenders such as Pau Cubarsí, the club still sees the need for an experienced figure capable of immediately strengthening the back line at Champions League level.
