The Scotland captain could provide the leadership Chelsea desperately need after another difficult Premier League campaign

Dietmar Hamann believes Chelsea should move quickly to sign Andy Robertson this summer, with the former Liverpool midfielder insisting the veteran full-back would be exactly the type of leader currently missing at Stamford Bridge.

Robertson is expected to leave Liverpool at the end of the 2025/26 season, bringing an emotional close to a hugely successful nine-year spell at Anfield.

The Scotland captain has been one of the defining figures of Liverpool’s modern era, helping the club win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and Club World Cup under Jürgen Klopp before continuing as a senior figure during the club’s transition under Arne Slot.

Speculation over Robertson’s future has intensified in recent weeks, with reports suggesting Tottenham Hotspur could emerge as a potential destination if they retain their Premier League status. However, Hamann believes another London club should be pushing far harder for the 32-year-old.

The former Germany international argued that Chelsea’s young squad lacks experienced personalities capable of guiding the team through difficult periods.

“Sometimes when things go badly, as they have now, the run of form is dreadful, you need experienced players who can calm young players down, where a young player looks up and somebody says to him, ‘Listen lad, don’t worry about it, we’ll be fine’,” Hamann told BetKings.

“A player like Andy Robertson, they should take him in a heartbeat. I think he’s exactly the type of player Chelsea needs or is crying out for. With one or two more experienced players, they’ve got to give themselves a chance. I don’t think the way the team is put together, they give themselves a chance. Andy Robertson, I’d take him at Chelsea in a heartbeat if he was interested.”

Robertson’s Liverpool legacy remains secure

Robertson’s expected departure marks the end of an era for Liverpool supporters. Signed from Hull City in 2017 for a fee widely viewed at the time as a bargain, the left-back developed into one of the best players in his position anywhere in world football.

His partnership with Trent Alexander-Arnold became one of Liverpool’s greatest tactical weapons during the Klopp era, with both full backs redefining the creative responsibilities of defenders in elite football.

Robertson has made more than 340 appearances for Liverpool and has consistently been praised for his relentless energy, leadership and mentality. Even as injuries and age gradually reduced his regular starting role over the past two seasons, he remained an influential figure within the dressing room.

Whether Robertson would consider a move to a direct Premier League rival remains unclear, but his experience, winning mentality and reputation as one of the league’s most respected professionals would undoubtedly make him an attractive option for several top clubs this summer.
