The United States international is in advanced talks over a new contract as his growing importance for club and country continues to rise ahead of the World Cup
Crystal Palace and Chris Richards have engaged in talks to extend the 26-year-old’s contract. Having arrived at Selhurst Park three years ago as a promising defender searching for stability after struggling to establish himself at Bayern Munich, Richards he has become one of the first names on Oliver Glasner’s starting XI.
Palace want to make sure he stays that way, as the South London club are pushing to extend Richards’ contract on significantly improved terms after a breakthrough season, and before this summer’s World Cup where his value could skyrocket.
According to BBC, discussions over a new deal kicked off back in November, but negotiations are now approaching a critical point.
Richards’ current contract, signed when he joined Palace from Bayern Munich in 2022 for just over £10 million, expires at the end of next season.
That situation naturally increases the pressure on Palace to avoid entering the final year of the agreement without clarity over his future. The player, though, is understood to be happy at Selhurst Park.
His performances this season have been among the clearest examples of Palace’s progress under Glasner. The American is calm in possession and aggressive defensively, qualities that have given Palace reliability in matches where margins have often been tiny.
And with Marc Guéhi having left Palace in January to join Manchester City, Richards has stepped up to the plate.

Palace believe Richards’ development deserves recognition after what has arguably been the strongest campaign of his club career and, at 26 years of age, they are aiming to keep him at the club for his peak years.
The defender has evolved from a rotational option into a consistent Premier League starter, adapting impressively to Glasner’s demanding system and helping the club through one of the most successful periods in its modern history.

European final creates unusual World Cup situation
While most international players will soon report for national team duty, Richards instead finds himself preparing for a European final.
Palace confirmed their place in the Conference League final on Thursday night after defeating Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in London, sealing a 5-2 aggregate semi-final victory. The result booked a meeting with Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig on May 27.
That date is important, as it clashes directly with the opening of Mauricio Pochettino’s United States training camp in Atlanta ahead of the World Cup.
Under FIFA rules, clubs are usually required to release players by May 24 or 25. UEFA finals, however, receive exemptions, meaning that Richards will stay with Palace a little longer.
