Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon to Bayern Munich rumours: It’s difficult to predict

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has spoken about the unpredictable summer ahead as interest is high in his stars

Newcastle United are braced for a summer of potential upheaval as several of their stars are attracting interest. Currently sitting midtable despite competing in the Champions League this season, the coming summer could see a number of players keen to move on.

One of those is Anthony Gordon, the English international winger who has 17 goals and 5 assists in 46 appearances for the Magpies this campaign. The 25-year-old joined Newcastle three years ago from Everton for over £40 million, but they could be set to move him on for a profit.

With a World Cup this summer to look forward to and his prime years ahead of him, it appears that Gordon is ready to take the next step in his career and keen to move on to a club that can take him to another level.

The Liverpool-born winger has been the subject of serious interest from Bayern Munich, where he could join international teammate Harry Kane. The German giants have reportedly already made contact with Newcastle about a potential deal this summer.

Eddie Howe coy on player exits

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been reluctant to talk about Gordon’s future, but he accepts this summer could be an unpredictable one. With the Magpies unlikely to qualify for Europe, several players could be moving on and Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães and Tino Livramento have also been strongly linked with transfers out of Tyneside.

“It is difficult for me to comment too much on individual players and timescales as that is going into an area that isn’t really my forte,” said Howe when asked about transfers at his most recent press conference.

I will leave that to other people. All I am doing is try and finish the season in a strong way and make sure players are committed to the here and now. there is no point looking to the future.

“The summer transfer window is difficult to predict and difficult to see what is going to happen on any level at this moment in time. We have three games to play and our full focus is on that.”

When pressed on the matter, Howe insisted that he was not involved in that side of things: “No, none. That’s not something I’m involved in.”

Gordon in demand with Barcelona amongst other admirers

While there could be plenty of movement at St James Park this summer, Gordon appears to be the most in demand. As well as Bayern Munich, several other clubs are keeping tabs on the winger.

Barcelona sporting director Deco met with Gordon’s agents last week, while Arsenal are also thought to be keeping an eye on his situation. Liverpool are also known to be long-time admirers after trying to sign him a couple of years ago.

Gordon is thought to be keen to explore his options and Newcastle’s best hope might be that the strong interest sparks a bidding war. The Magpies are keen to almost double their money, with Bayern, Arsenal and Liverpool all told that £78 million is the asking price, but it is thought that a fee of closer to £65 million with add-ons would get the deal done.
